Notes
General:

The date of his death or name of wife have not been found. He was aRoyalist during the Revolution and became a refugee at Kingson, KingsCo, New Brunswick, during or after the close of the war. It is thoughthe went there with John Marvin and others from Norwalk, CT. Positiveevidence that he was a son of William and Elizabeth Ellis Benson islacking, though it is almost certain that he was. His name would havebeen given after his great uncle, Seth Stetson. The name of Studsonwould indicate strongly thathe was a Stetson descendant, as the nameStudson, Stutson and Stedson were all from the name Stetson, and therewere no other Benson-Stetson marriages at that period except that ofWilliam and Eilzabeth Stetson. EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOWN OF POMPEY
Submitted by Kathy Crowell

627-631.

In the eastern valley, in which is situated the hamlet of Delphi, settlement began a little later than in the more central part of thetown. Samuel Sherwood was probably the first comer in the locality, and settled on Lot 84 in 1795, on the farm afterwards owned by PatrickShields. Mr. Sherwood held the rank of major-general in the army. In1798 or 1799 Elijah Hill, from Pittsfield, Mass., settled three milesdown the valley, northward from the village. In March, 1800, RufusSheldon, father of a talented family, among whom was Harvey Sheldon ofNew York, settled one and one-half miles northwest from the village. In the same year Col. Ensign Hill, brother of Elijah, settled south ofthe village. In 1801 Elihu Barber located on the hill west of thevalley, about a mile and a half from the creek. Like many others ofthe pioneers, he believed that when the forest was cleared from thelower lands they would be practically worthless. In 1802 JamesMcClure settled a mile south of Elijah Hill's location, and in thefollowing year, probably, Samuel Draper, from Vermont, settled in thatvicinity. At about the same time with McClure, Benjamin Coats andWilliam Peas located on lands occupied within recent years by theirdescendants. They were from Lebanon, N.Y., and in 1802 Ozias Burr andWilliam Cook came on from the same place. Moses Blowers and StutsonBenson settled early on lot 84, near Delphi. Capt. Theophilas Tracysettled a half mile southeast on the farm subsequently occupied byHenry Ryder. In about 1803 or 1804 Tracy built the frame of the firstgrist mill on Limestone Creek, the one owned in after years byAlexander Maxwell. This mill was completed by Elnathan Griffith, while owned by Moses Savage. The two runs of stone were brought fromAlbany by teams that had drawn wheat thither to market, and cost $100.They were French burr stone, and were still running in the mill in1870. Deacon Moses Savage settled early on the east side of thecreek, built the first carding mill in the valley, and between 1825-30built the grist mill owned in later years by Edgar Pratt. Dr. JosephEly bought in 1804 land on the hotel site, where he found a "brushhouse," which some settler or squatter had left. He occupied it tillthe fall of 1806, when he employed
Elnathan Griffith to build a frame addition. Dr. Ely was fromMontgomery county, N.Y., kept a tavern on the site of the later hotel, and practiced medicine. This little settlement was known in earlyyears as "Pompey Four Corners," but the settlers wisely gave it themore euphonious title of Delphi. Samuel G. Willard and Daniel H.Hubbard built a store there in 1805, and Daniel Allen settled in 1802,two miles north of the village. Hubbard & Willard were the firstmerchants to keep a full assortment of goods in the place, and theysubsequently sold to Esli Squires. Their store served to relieve thesettlers from going to Cazenovia or Manlius to trade. Squires, in1810, built and occupied a store on the corner where Marble afterwardstraded, selling the building he had purchased of Hubbard & Willard toRichard Taylor. Taylor sold out to Herrick Allen, son of Daniel Allenjust mentioned, who was the leading merchant many years. Schuyler VanRensselaer was also an early merchant at Delphi, and in 1818 sold outto Matthew B. Slocum, father of Maj.-Gen. Henry W. Slocum. About theyear 1808 William Shankland settled in this valley on the east side ofthe creek, his
dwelling being just over the Madison county line. He was father ofthe late Judge William H. Shankland of Cortland. On lot 99,southwest of the village, Walter Bates was probably the first settler. This lot was drawn by Barnardus Swartwout, whose son Robert came onwith verbal authorization to sell the lot, which he did. He sold, in1806, to Jasper Galliway, and probably part to Thomas Derbyshire, oneof which sales embraced land occupied in recent years by Russell andSheldon Strickland. Elisha Litchfield was a settler in Delphi in1812, and kept a store. Mr. Litchfield became one of the mostprominent men in the county, and held various public offices, as thereader has already learned. In 1810 Ephraim Cleveland came to theplace, and during one or two years kept a tavern on the later hotelsite, and died there. His property passed to Mr. Litchfield. Amongother early settlers in this vicinity were Reuben Benton, who was ajustice of the peace; Bela Cole, Amos
Benedict, who in 1806 had a blacksmith shop two miles north of Delphi;two brothers named Townsend, who were the first blacksmiths in thevillage; Jabez Groudevant, a cabinet maker of 1810, who followed thebusiness about forty years; Oliver Rogers, a wagon maker in 1816;Deacon Abbott, the first tanner, who in 1807 or 1808 built the vatsfor the old tannery, which he sold to James Reeves. This tannerypassed, in 1820, to John and Michael Spencer, two Englishmen, whocarried on the business many years. It was owned later by CalebTerry; Henry Ten Eyck, who early owned the woolen factory establishedin 1812, and burned in 1853.

General:

In 1777 Stutson and Elizabeth Benson lived on or near the Benningtonbattlefield at Waloomsac, which is within the State of NY, and only afew miles from the city of Bennington, VT. Various traditions arepreserved of their experiences at this time, one being that he wastaken a prisoner and sent to Montreal, and another that it was hisson, Stutson, Jr., then 10 years old, who was captured by the Toriesor Indians. There is no official record of his having been a soldierat the time of the battle, though he issaid to have been, but theVermont Revolutionary Pay Rolls show that he was a private in Capt;Matthias Button's Company of Col. John Abbott's regiment of foot.About 1785 or 1786 he moved a few miles to White Creek, now inWashington Co, NY, where there was a Baptist church, of which hebecame clerk, the Rev. William Waite being pastor. His sister,Thankful Dutcher, and her family lived there. He came to Pompey a bout1796, the year in which his brother-in-law, Benjamin Lewis, came.Several of his sons had come in 1793, and his daughter Elizabeth Marshand her family in 1797. He sometimes preached, but probably was neverordained.. The records of his children's births are from his Bible.(Benson Family Records, pp. 23-24)

Stutson Benson came to Dutchess Co,NY, with his parents when a childand married there Bathsheba Lewis in1760. She a daughter of John andBathsheba Lewis who had lived in Dutchess Co, NY, for many years butmoved to the town of Washington, Berkshire Co, MA, before 1765. Hisname on the records of births at Rochester is spelled "Stedson," buthe spelled his name "Stutson." The name was that of his grandmother,Elizabeth Stetson. The name is spelled several different ways on theold records of Scituate, showing that it had different pronunciations. After their marriage it is uncertain where they lived for severalyears, but at the time of the battle of Bennington they lived verynear the battlefield at Waloomsac Co, NY, where there was a Baptistchurch of which he was clerk. They removed from White Creek to Pompey,Onondaga Co, NY, about 1796, several of theri sons had come to Pompeyin 1793, their daughter Elizabeth Marsh and familiy came in 1797 andher brother, Benjamin Lewis, in 1796. He died March 1, 1820, she diedJuly 18, 1850, aged 84. He is credited with service in Vermont in theRevolution, thoI cannot find that he ever lived in Vermont. Waloomsac, where the battle was fought, is within the State of New York, but atthat time was in territory claimed by both New York and Vermont.

Stutson Benson, an Early Settler in Pompey, Onondaga County

From "Re-Union of the Sons and Daughters of the Old Town of Pompey,"Pompey, NY, 1875, pg. 207:

DELPHI. . . Moses Blowers and Stutson Benson settled at an early daynear Barber's, on lot 84. ibid, pp. 270-271: BENSON.

Peter Benson came to Pompey about the year 1793, being then thirteenyears of age; he came to assist his older brother in building a barn, for Samuel Sherwood, on lot number 84; the compensation for buildingwhich paid for 100 acres of land on the same lot.

This farm is located about one mile north-west from the village ofDelphi, and was afterwards owned by Peter Benson. The father of Mr.Benson, came a few years later; his name was Stutson Benson, was afarmer, and resided in Pompey till his death, which ocurred in 1820.One incident of his life is worthy of note. At the time of hismarriage, he was unable to read or write; like Andrew Johnson, helearned his alphabet of his wife; he became a well read man, particularly in the Bible,a nd occasionally engaged in preaching theGospel; much of his writing is now in possession of A. P. Benson, ofPompey, and is a neat legible hand with correct orthography. Peter wasthe eighth child and fifth son, in a family of ten children; he wasfive feet and ten inchdes in height, with broad shoulders and firmlyknit frame, and weighed in the prime of manhood, 200 pounds; he had afirm, quick step, and never would allow his children to move at a slowpace, or as he termed it, "as though they were pulling stakes out ofthe ground;" he was of a jovial turn, was never morose or austere
in his family, though his rule with his children, was instantobedience, and they found it the part of wisdom to pay strictattention to this inflexible rule. He was a farmer, and acquired afair competence in his calling; he died in 1864, at the age ofeight-four years; at the time of his death, he was a resident ofFabius.

POMPEY ACADEMY

The petition came before the Regents at a meeting on March 17, 1800,and was referred to a committee of the board, consisting of JudgeBenson and Simeon De Witt, who reported at a meeting held March 31,1800. There was then probably no academy in Onondaga county, andthere seemed to be some doubt as to the propriety of locating the onlyone in the county in this town. At the meeting just mentioned aresolution was adopted referring the question of location of theacademy to the Board of Supervisors of the county. They met on thefirst Tuesday in October, 1800, and reported favorably upon PompeyHill as a proper place for the institution. In the spring of 1801 theregents resolved to make the granting of a charter to the academyconditional upon the erection of a suitable building. A committeeconsisting of Manoah Pratt, Henry Seymour and Samuel S. Baldwin wasappointed to have charge of the erection of the building, and theymade an agreement dated July 20, 1807, under which William Lathrop andGeorge W. Wood agreed to do the work on
the building. The contract price for the labor was $200. On the 2dof March, 1810, William Lathrop, one of the builders, signed thefollowing: Agreed this 2d of March, 1810, to relinquish theunfinished part of the within-mentioned job, and to accept of onehundred and forty dollars in full of what has been done.

HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF FABIUS
Submitted by Kathy Crowell
Source: Dwight H. Bruce, Onondaga's Centennial. Boston History Co.,1896, Vol. I, pp. 866-889.
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nyononda/FABIUS/FABHISTO.HTM

Among the settlers of this town prior to 1850 were the following, eastand south of Fabius village:

Mr. Curtis (farmer and hotel keeper, died in 1833), Ephraim Wallace,Martin Lewis, Edward Merrills, Orel Pope, the Bacon family, GeorgePettit, Elizur Andrews, John Keeney, Eli Webster, Champion Keeney,Abner Brown, James Andrews, Thomas Keeney, Isaac Case, the Osborn andHicks families, Humphrey Fosmer, Amos Tenny, Gideon Beebe, Orrin Fox,and the families of Vincent, Dean, Bump and Stockham. East and northof the village: John Beach, Benjamin Wallace, Martin Wallace, Mr.Howe, George Wallace, Allen F. Locke, John Conklin, Mr. Pendell, JohnTobin, Stutson Benson, Oliver Williams, Horace Tuller, Jonathan Hoar,Benjamin Webster, Abel Webster, John Crandall, John Daniels, andBenson whose house stood on the Fabius and Pompey line. South andwest: John Doubleday, Abel Negus, Abel Clough, Jonathan Swift, HarryLewis, Joseph Waters, Nathaniel Waters, Worthy Waters, Squire Joslyn(long a justice of the peace), Daniel Hill, Bennett Adams, SamuelRowley, Benjamin Haswell, Newell Rowley, Orsemus Hills, Thomas Dunn,Isaac Horton, and the Newcomb, Winegar and St. John families. Northand west of the Center: Elisha Sprague, Buton and Russell (who had asaw mill, now run by Charles Johnson), Edmund Harris, Stephen Hill(who also owned a saw mill), Norman Hall, Jackson Ellis, John Jerome,David Connable, Mr. Coats, Stephen Coville, John Cadwell, and JosephHill, a wagonmaker, who came from De Ruyter and settled in Fabiusvillage about 1830, and died in Dansville, N.Y., in 1835.

It is tradition that the brothers Benson built a large barn for Ge.Samuel Sherwood the first year they were in Pompey, for which theyrfeceived 100 acres of land. Stutson was the only one of them who hadthe skill to frame a barn.. In 1808 he bought land in Pompey and isdescribed as "of Pompey." He sold this land to his brother William in1815 and was then "of Cazenovia." He bought land in Ashtabula Co, OH,in 1820, but did not settle on it then, though some of his sons mayhave done so. Ursula Martin, daughter of Eri, remembered of hearingthat "while living in Pompey" her grandfather took the twins toCazenovia to see a hanging, and the only execution of the times wasthat of the Indiana, Antone, in the fall of 1823, so they must havesettled in Ohio after 1823.

Their tradition of the Battle of Bennington is that Stutson Sr. livedon or near the battle field, at Waloomsac, and that Stutson Jr., thenten years old, was taken prisoner by the Indians while carryingdrinking water to the patriot soldiers, and was taken to Canada, butwas later released because of his youth, and made his way home, suffering great hardship and nearly starving on the way. From anentirely different source we had learned that Bathsheba and her sonWilliam had searched on the battle field, persumably for this missingboy. He is described as a small man, light hair, blue eyes, of anactive and determined disposition and great endurance. Benson FamilyRecords, pp. 33-34.

=======================
In 1777 at the age of 10 years, Stutson Benson, Jr., lived near theBennington Battlefield at Waloomsac, which is in the state of New Yorkbut onlly a few miles from the city of Bennington, VT. One day whilecarrying drinking water to the patriot soldiers, he was captured bythe Indians, and when he failed to return home, his mother andbrother, William, searched in vain on the battlefield for the missingboy. He was taken to Canada, possibly the Montreal area, but laterreleased because of his youth. He eventually made his way home, suffering great hardship and nearly starving on the way.

Stutson, Jr., was born 13 Oct 1767, the son of Stutson, Sr., andBathsheba (Lewis) Benson. His father was named after Elizabeth StetsonBenson, wife of William Benson and grandmother of Stutson, Sr. Adescendant of her family was responsible for the manufacture of theStetson hat. It is worth mentioning also that Stutson Sr.'s niece,Ruth, daughter of brother Joell, married Adam Singer and was themother of Isaac Merritt Singer, inventor of the Singer sewing machine.

Stutson Sr. is shown on the Vermont Revolutionary pay rolls to be aprivate in Capt. Matthias Button's Company of Col. John Abbott'sregiment of foot shortly after 1777. About 1785 he moved to WhiteCreek, NY, where he was the clerk in the Baptist Church. He sometimespreached but probably was never ordained.

Stutson's ancestor, John Benson, traveled with his wife, Mary WilliamsBenson, and two children, John and Mary, from Caversham, Oxfordshire,England, to Hingham, MA, in 16638. They are listed on the passangerlist of the "Confidence," a sailing vessel designed to carry 50 tonsof dried and pickled fish from Maine to England. At that time, Bensonwas spelled with an "i" (Binson).

At age 28 Stutson Jr. married Sarah Sumner, daughterof Captain Johnand Mehitable (Perry) Sumner of Edinburg, Saratoga Co, NY. She wasborn 28 Oct 1772, at Ashford, CT, and died 18 Dec 1858 at Amboy, OH.Stutson Jr. was a carpenter and millwright by trade and often workedwith his brothers in the Pompey/Cazenovia area. At one time thebrothers were commissioned to build a large barn for General Sherwood.Stutson Jr. was the only one in the area at that time with the skillto frame a barn. He received a 100 acre grant of land for the job.

In 1808 he bought land in Pompey, selling it to his brother, William,in 1815. During these years, he built mills through the centralwestern part of the state and in the Genesee Valley where he alsoowned one mill. He bought land in Ashtabula Co, OH, near Amboy andLake Road area, in 1820, and is listed on the 1820 county census, butrecords indicate that the family, along with William, did not settlehere until 1825. The Benson home still exists (1985) in the center ofAmboy and is one of the oldest in the area. Although facts are sketchyfor this period, it is know that he continued the carpentry andmillwright trade in the Ashtabula Co. area. He died in 1845 and wasburied at Amboy cemetery.
