The above photograph was taken in Iraklion, Crete, 1900c. On the reverse of the photograph is written:

the word "remembrance" was used differently at that time.

National newspaper report about the crash.

A victim of an accident. The Daily Express report on the accident reads as follows:

TRAIN CRASH HURLS INJURED 200 YARDS DOWN BANK from ERNEST ASHWICK Geneve, Sunday

Five British tourists--four of them women--were killed and 13 injured when a train ripped into their holiday coach at an unguarded level crossing near Meiringen, Switzerland, today. The coach, which came from Wigan, was smashed 200 yards down an embankment and completely wrecked.

Tonight Dr Rolf Stadler is fighting to save the lives of the injured in the little hospital at Meiringen.

Dr Stadler said, "All I know is the 13 injured need most serious attention. Two or three of them are in a serious condition but we hope to pull them through".

Late tonight he gave the names of all the injured. They are:-

Walter Rushton, the coach driver, from Wigan; Mr H Melling of Higher Lane; Mr and Mrs J Stanley of Dean Lane, Croft, near Warrington; Harry Twist of Ashton-in-Makerfield; Mr and Mrs William Fletcher of Prestwich;

Mrs Mary Haliwell of Orrell who was with her daughter Olive; Mr and Mrs Brown of Werneth Road, Woodley, Cheshire; Mr and Mrs Allen of Maghull; Miss Doris Wilsondale of Smithills, Bolton.

I HEARD MOANING

Two men are known to have escaped. They are Edward Jackson of Carnforth Street, Rusholme, and Harry Scholfield of Mossway, Alkrington, Middleton.

Mr Jackson, a 56-year-old chemical worker, is a widower. He woke up just before the crash.

"I never saw the crash nor even knew we were on a level crossing", he said.

"I was slightly stunned and struggled through the emergency exit on the left side of the coach,

"There was little noise coming from the wreckage of the coach when I got out. Everybody seemed stunned".

Unbeknown to us all, Mum was suffering from cancer at that time. The desease was not diagnosed untill late that year.

Dad's grave, also the resting place of Mum and Norma and Brenda

Mum was born at 8 Silk Street, Lower Broughton, Salford. She attended St Mathias Church of England School where she learned the three R's. The family moved to 4 Sandford Street and then to 12 Duke Street. Both in the Lower Broughton area.

From here on is my own conjecture based on documented evidence and information gatherd from Joan and Bill Fletcher.:

I think she fell in love with dad, who at about this time was organising dances with his brother Albert, and they went for a week in the Isle of Man, July 1933 (I have a hotel receipt and photo's which imply this to me). Sometime after this things went pair shaped. They broke up. Mum bought a sewing machine in November 1934 for £23.15 (a colossal amount in those days) and went into business with Gladys Cooper as a part time dress maker (they were working together at Cohen and Wilks). Mum moved to 6 Willingdon Drive (still with her parents). Her sister Nan lived close by. One day dad visited her Nan and Joan (daughter) was sent round to bring mum with some spoof excuse and mum was placed in the front room. Nan then came in and said "There's someone here to see you", and introduced dad. So the romance was rekindled.

The tragic facts of the marriage are in my dads biographical notes.

He resided in Bumbles Bistro, Nerja, Spain 1982. TWENTY YEARS IN ESPAÑA by William A. Fletcher

I'll be as brief as possible about my last twenty years in Spain since I came over in April 1979. I had the family printing business of A.J.Fletcher & Son Ltd. in Manchester, also since 1972 a Restaurant and Craft shop with accomodation near Hayfield in the Peak District, Derbyshire, 28 miles from Manchester. My wife June & I had gone there to escape all the council work we were doing because, by then, I had been the Mayor, a senior member and Alderman (youngest ever as I was when I was the mayor). June was also a councillor and had been Mayor. Anyway, things were getting too much and we needed a break (not that we really got one because we ended up with a busy place to run). However in 1978, with Lynne, Mark and Jenny flown the nest, we decided to move out to Spain and work there for a bit before taking early retirement. With money from the sales of the businesses we should have sufficient to establish ourselves, and investments as well. So we spent some time checking the Costa del Sol in southern Spain ( we knew the Costa Brava well, but the winters could be cold and wet). Then we found Nerja that was just starting to develop and thought that it would be an ideal place to kick off - accordingly I came over in April 1979 as advance party to case the joint, leaving June in charge of the Chinley Head restaurant, and Lynne's husband and partner along with my son Mark to take over A.J.Fletcher & Son Ltd. on a payment over a period basis.

So I found a nice three bed house overlooking the pool in a small complex called Nueva Andalucia and settled in, doing paintings and selling them; whilst I looked for the main chance and also established myself to get work papers. By 1980, with another friend Oliver Hanson from south Manchester, we went into partnership to develop a large restaurant in an up market urbanisation of villas and apartments on the perimeter of Nerja called El Capistrano. The idea was that our wives would come out and we would run the project on a shift system because it was a busy place, the bars went on sometimes till 4 or 5 in the morning! As we were preparing for the Christmas Season events in El Capistrano, I got a message that Dad was in hospital but “not to worry he'd be OK” - but he died on Friday morning 19th December 1980, so I had to find a flight which at Christmas was impossible. However a lady who had come out to work here had a return ticket spare so she kindly gave it to me. So I got there in time for the funeral. Then I had to return right away (which was another problem) via Madrid, then train to Malaga, then a taxi. You can imagine my mindset over the Christmas Festivities, I was not a barrel of fun, also neither wives came out so things were a bit hectic. Early in 1981 my partner Oliver brought in the lady who had given her ticket to me to help run the business - her name was Valerie Simonsen, from Edinburgh, five years younger than me and without her helping out we would have been up the swannee, and I may have drunk myself into oblivion because of Dad's death, my marital problem and subsequent divorce. The bonus for me was that we got on well and ended up getting married in '84. We sold the house in Nueva Andalucia and Capistrano Restaurant in late '81.”

In '82 Val and I opened up another restaurant in Nerja centre and called it Bumbles Bistro, a Bumble Bee being our logo. Val did the cooking (with no experience of catering cooking before, but producing brilliant hearty soups, pies, desserts etc.), with hired help of course and I was out front with a couple of waiters. It turned out to be a winner and we got mentions in all the guide books - we had to close from November to March because it would have killed us otherwise, but it gave us time off to visit UK. In '87 I had a stroke, fortunately not from a heart condition, but an old spinal injury which had caused a neck vertabrae to cut off the blood supply to my brain, but the medics warned me that the stress of catering could cause a repeat and maybe the big one. So we leased it out and started up a small art gallery selling my work and that of other painters and we did quite well, but the lessees made a hash of things at Bumbles and we had to recover it, which we then turned into a shop selling souvenirs, paintings and prints and clothing, so we had two businesses on the go. In '94 we sold the gallery because it was too time consuming and we didn't like working apart and concentrated on a kids clothes shop in the ex-Bumbles property, which took off well, because we bought stuff in UK, which the Spaniards liked, and Spanish gear for the tourists, so we were open all year round. Two years go we decided to call it a business day and sold the shop to a mixed marriage couple from Kenya.

We lived at the rear of the shop before in a large apartment overlooking the pool and garden, so we had to find somewhere else, just when prices were rising - however we found here, which is an eight storey block, we being on the 7th floor, with tremendous views plus the winter sun in the afternoon. We also bought a studio in the block where the shop was as an investment, which is occupied by grandson Miguel (Michael) - and thats another story. Val has (or had as you will see later) a son and daughter from her first marriage, when I met her she had been divorced 12 years. In '86 daughter Amanda in UK, with three children (Michael, Charlotte and Thomas) had a divorce on the grounds of ill treatment, and the ex kept on harassing her, so for her safety we brought her over to stay until things cleared. She's still here, remarried to Juan Francisco Herrera Giron a.k.a. Paco, by whom she's had two daughters, so now there are five grandchildren from Amanda 9 years to 22 (Miguel). Val's son Gavin died last year from epilepsy, aged 41, due to stress brought on by overwork and a new marriage of six months - a daughter was born, but due to (we think) his wife Carol feeling guilty, she refuses to have any contact with us or even have some keepsake, so at the moment that is one grandchild we wont see.

My lot in UK are doing well. Lynne (50 next year) is divorced and has Paul as her partner. Her son Adrian is my eldest grandson (23) who has a degree in Marketing and is working in Reading; Mark (46) has a son Billy (8) from his first marriage and his new wife (four years ago) Marion's daughter, Kate (8), plus Annabel (3) and Lydia (1) from the new union. Jenny (44) has Jos (9) from her first relationship and Maia (4) with her partner Richard Stone. They are all in good employment - Jenny is probably the foremost specialist in teaching deaf/blind children, she works for the SENSE organisation and travels all round the world setting up centres (Rich is the house husband and a budding poet). Mark is with the Manchester Education Authority, but is now looking to use his artistic talents to start a design business painting murals in houses and designing Web Sites. Lynne is a Youth Training Officer for a big organisation. Not including Edinburgh,we have twelve grandchildren. And I bet it wont be long before we have great-grandchildren!

So my lovely Val and I are supposed to be retired but our Val now is an Avon distributor, as well as raising money for Epilepsy research; whilst I still do some art work as well as graphics on my PC, doing short run print for local people (my old printing skills being useful). Besides the normal aches and pains of old age, Val has a gall stone problem and we've just discovered she has marks on her retinas which may restrict vision in the future, laser being no use for the condition. Due to the spinal injury (and sports abuse) I now have chronic sciatica which is a pain (ho ho) and limits my activities on occasion, plus a touch of the prostate problem (a cyst in my case) which I get regularly checked - beyond that we're fine considering our ages (Val's 68 and himself is 73 - never thought I'd make it this far!) Up to Christmas 1998 we had two dogs, a lovely boxer called Duquesa (Dutchess) and a sheeplike long haired black and white local breed called Scotty, but Duquesa succumed to age and arthritis when 11 years old.

Nerja (pronounced Nerrha) has developed a great deal since we arrived, but we have many friends now, mainly Spaniards, and its still very Spanish here, and there's plenty of Fiestas to enjoy and few days without seeing the sun - the locals work hard and play very hard. So we're just 50k east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol ( Yankee friends say its very much like California, the main occupations are tourism, horticulture, (melons, grapes, tomatoes, potatoes, lemons, avocaados, mangos and other tropical fruits) and construction, which is very big at the moment because the coast is awash with black pesetas and with 18 months the euro comes in as the sole currency, so they're getting rid now! The winter climate is the mildest in Europe and summer temps are in the 90's shade. I can't see us ever leaving here (we've even booked a "nicho" - a place in the cemetery here - well you've got to look ahead!). Nothing however can beat an al fresco meal of fresh fish, prawns, tortillas español etc. washed down with sangria or red wine with a drop of lemonade in it (tinto de verano) under vines and orange trees at some venta (wayside restaurant) or on the beach beside the Med. Oh I forgot our local olive oil 100% virgen (not many of those about).

In those past twenty years there have been a wealth of incidents; many happy, lots exciting and some sad, but it's certainly been interesting, more of which I will be relating in my memoirs which I am currently writing for my children and their children to read in future years.

1987 saw me taking a group of lads from the cycle club to Benidorm, Spain, ( I had an engagement to entertain there) for some early season training and racing. The main feature of the trip was that the Vaulta de Espana (Tour of Spain) was starting from Benidorm just a few days after we arrived. We met up with several of the teams and on one day the lads rode up into the mountains with the previous years Tour de France winner, Lauren Fignion and his team. The fact that the Vaulta was starting there was a complete surprise to all of us. Information about cycle racing in Spain was very spars in the UK at that time. I managed to get two races in for the lads by hiring a rickety old van and driving two hair-raising trips over the mountains. The Spanish race organisers were very apprehensive of us but after throwing a few bob into the kitty everything went OK. The lads came back with some huge trophies.

Tony travelled in Europe, November, 2000. "November, 2000, saw us heading for the infamous Benidorm, Spain, on a four week entertainment contract. Three nights into the engagement I acquired a stomach problem that developed into possible food poisoning. This put pressure on my heart resulting in one heart valve mal-functioning and so to hospital in an emergency ambulance. Elaine accompanied me and nearly had a heart attack herself due to the erratic driving of the ambulance man. They kept Elaine waiting for FIVE hours with no information as to my condition. My agent, Danny, and his wife Irene hastened to the hospital but were unable to discover anything either. Eventually Elaine spotted me being wheeled to the x-ray united which gave her some relief knowing that I was at least alive. I was given five lots of medication and told "No alcohol" (I think this was the only English word the hospital staff knew)."

"February, 2001, Elaine, Mario (a wonderful, energetic barman) and me at the Porto Fino Restaurant, Xemxija, St Paul's Bay, Malta, The Island was a culture shock to us. Such wonderful people living in such harsh conditions. We visited the nearby Island of Gozo which was "something else again". Elaine saw a simply beautiful bracelet there, woven gold, but refused to let me purchase it because she thought it was too expensive. On returning to the main island of Malta we looked for something similar but discovered that the type of bracelet was only made in one place on earth - Gozo! We returned to Malta within a month, spent a most memorable night on Gozo and bought the bracelet. We returned to Malta in June, 2002, and had a completely different sort of holiday but still simply mind blowing. We love the Island and it's people."

"Reunion of three Hinchliffe cousins (L.to R. Bill, me and Graham). The first time for 35 years that we had been in the same room together."

Tony's. Main Occupation: Entertainer. Here follows a brief autobiography Tony's early years.

My first recollection in life is falling from my small three wheeler cycle onto the concrete road outside my home at 6 Willingdon Drive. I fell square onto my face and remember not so much the pain, but the throbbing and swelling as though my face was getting larger and larger like a balloon. My next recollection is nestling in my grandmother's arms and watching the living room door open and my mother, seeing the state of my face, playing heck with my grandmother for not calling for the doctor. I remember grandma had put butter on my face (a standard remedy for bumps and bruises in those days).

The feature of my starting primary school was incontinence. Primary school lessons I don't recollect, except to say that I think I enjoyed maths and religious education. I remember Miss Pickstone. She was blond, tall and slim and had large pointed breasts (her bra). Vaguely, I remember moving from class room to class room as the years went by.

Out of school my time was taken up almost entirely with visits to Heaton Park. I became an avid bird watcher. It was only in recent years I realised why it was so much of a challenge to discover new species of birds. It was just after the war and the park had been used for military training (there were several spots where we would dig up spent bullets as souvenirs). Also, during the war people would be after any wild life they could get there hands on for food.

At about six-years-old I received my first "whiskering". I can't remember my dad so I'll never know if he did it to me, but I do remember my chum Malcolm Clayton's dad sitting me on his knee and giving me a rare old "scrubbing" round the cheeks. It was about that time that the first car appeared at Willingdon Drive, much to the excitement of all the lads.

When I was seven or eight-years-old I developed a habit of stealing. I stole from my mother's purse and, this was my first feeling of shame, I got caught with the lad next door's cricket ball. Rather pathetically, I'd painted it with the cardinal red paint my mum used for painting the front and back steps in the hope that he wouldn't recognise it.

One of my firmest memories of Willingdon Drive is being with Barbara in the back garden playing with a golf club and ball. Barbara was encouraging me to hit it and, of course, the inevitable happen, I did, right through the back living room window. I remember my granddad, who was by then totally blind, saying, "What was that" as it whistled passed his head. Bye-the-way, my memories of "gramps", as we would call him, are of a very nice old chap who I never heard a cross word from. I used to guide him to St. Margaret's pub saying "up" and "down" as we came to a curb-stone. When we got a television in the mid-fifties, I commentated on boxing matches for him, not knowing then his strong affinity to his younger brother Alfred who boxed while in the army (see Alfred Hinchliffe).

I started secondary school as a dunce. I was put in the "Transition" class where my teacher was an elderly lady called Mrs Neilson. She had a profound effect on me. She was a tremendous person. I couldn't read when I came under her charge but, by god, with her encouragement, reading became my life blood.

In spite of my earlier experience of self propelled wheeled transport, about the age of fourteen I was desperate for a bike. Mum eventually relented, she was fearful for my life, and had Barbara's ladies style (no cross-bar) bike "done-up" for me. Thus started an almost fanatical interest in cycling and, later, cycle racing.

When I left school I wanted to be a joiner but there was a huge influx of kids on the job market at that time, war baby's they called us, so there was no chance of that. I started work at my granddad's old employer, Baxendale & Co.

My first romance was Maureen Dalton (maybe because she was the first girl that ever noticed me). She was illegitimately born. Her mother was in the army and had dumped her and she lived with her mother's sister's family on the Langley Council Estate, Middleton, but most importantly (or unfortunately for me) Maureen was a staunch Roman Catholic. I remember walking her home from Chilton's Dance Hall in Crumpsall on the night we met, New Year's Eve, 1961. We passed the church I had, for some reason, attended a few days earlier on Christmas Eve (in a very inebriated condition, yet politely). I told her of the occurrence, she said, "That's not a Catholic Church, is it?". Oh! Dear, Catholics and non-Catholics were not compatible in those days. So, who got a broken heart then? I did. Strangely enough, I only knew Maureen from then till St. Patrick's night (48 days) but she turned my life completely up-side-down.

I turned to religion to try and get over Maureen, eventually joining the Pentecostal Movement, some of the happiest years of my life. I read and studied the bible from cover to cover. In 1962 I bought an old Mobelette moped and the following year, a new one. I ran the Sunday School at Beulah Pentecostal Church, started a Wednesday night childrens Bible Club and preached in a lay capacity. It was at the church that I met Rita and we got married (both virgins, of course) and started a family.

Soon, though, I realised the need to put food on the table and my duties and attendance at church became less and my attendance at work became more. I was working 12 hours a day 7 days a week at the East Lancashire Paper Mill until I found what I was really good at, and where there was easy money to be had. Thus, in 1968 I started my entertaining career.

My vocal chords had been stretched through the church, singing gusty gospel songs, and the mill that I was working in was huge and voices resonated like a gigantic echo chamber, and in the open top hoist (lift/elevator), even more so. Well, I must have got enough confidence from all that to try my hand, and so I did.

After many, many talent competitions in the Manchester pubs and clubs I got my first booking at Radcliffe Working Men's Club. Five "spots" for three pounds and began my search for "stardom".

I bought an old Ford Anglia van for 70 pounds, only to have it "written-off" a few months later when someone ploughed into my rear end. I got 25 pounds from the insurance company. I couldn't really argue because I had not passed my driving test at that time so was technically un-insured, as I was driving without a qualified driver with me. In fact, it was several years before I did pass my test. However, mum came to the rescue and gave me 200 pounds from her meagre savings to buy another car. I met Elaine about this time and on Friday 13th August 1971, while dashing between clubs (three or four clubs a night was the norm at that time), she was with me when it was my turn to plough into the back of another car, strangely enough, another "artiste", Sheila Sexton. I wrote her car off on the spot and made my car terminal ill.

Well, that's enough. The rest of my life can be gleaned from the bare-bone facts that are in this program.

Joanne also Sunday 7th September 1997 in Los Angeles, California, USA. Here follows a brief biography:I will try to keep our story short and interesting as I know our lives always seem much more interesting to us than others. so here goes. I would first like to address the name change from Hinchliffe to Kelly. Well, I was married once before when I was quite young and it didn't work out, though the name change worked well for me in my business, so I kept it. Now as far as John and I meeting, we danced together in our very first professional show back in 1981, for MGM. John was 22 and I was 17 years old. The show was called "HELLO HOLLYWOOD HELLO", and we performed at the MGM hotel in Reno, Navada. It was the largest show we have ever performed in, with a cast of 150 singers and dancers. It was quite a spectacular show and John and I actually danced together as partners. After a year in the show, John moved on, dancing in Spain and Italy for about three years. He worked in various shows and dance companies as well as doing some T.V. work in Italy. He lived in Madrid in Spain, and in Verona in Italy. He also learned to speak both languages fluently while he live there. I stayed in the show for 5 years performing 2 shows a night for 6 days a week. I then moved to Las Vegas, where I danced in the "Lido De Paris", "Jubilee" (another MGM show), and some other smaller cabaret style shows. I also did the BOB HOPE pre Olympic show in Seoul, Korea in 1988. This job gave me the travel bug so I decided to work on cruise ships for a while. I loved the ships, and ended up doing 5 world cruises. It wasn't until 1993 that I was sent to Japan to work on the Japanese ship owned by the company I had been working for, Crystal Cruises. It is there that John and I met again, after 12 years. We danced together as partners again and soon became a couple. it was great, as we didn't work much during our stay on ship, so we had a lot of free time together to explore and enjoy Japan. I was transferred after four months though to another ship and it was a year before we decided to be together for good and start our lives together. We both danced in shows in Las Vegas at the Luxor and the Sahara and we then retired as dancers to pursue new careers and a family.. We were married on September 7th, 1997, in Malibu, California. We had a small wedding, but all the family came over from England for a few weeks and we had a great time. It was a day to remember and a dream come true.

John is from Los Angeles (born and raised here) and we moved back together in 1995. John now works for N.B.C. in Editing and Credit Design. He started out in Computer Animation about four years ago and has been fortunate in finding consistent work in his field since then. He is really striving for a full time gig as an editor for T.V. and movies with one of the primary studios or T.V. networks. It is a tough business, but we keep working toward where we want to be. I became a floral designer and still work for special events, holidays and weddings, but my real purpose in life is as a full time mother. We have our wonderful little girl, Catrina Mechelle, who is the joy of our lives and certainly keeps mommy on the go. She was born August 24th, 1999, and has been my main focus since that day. I love being a mom and hope we can have another baby someday soon.

Well, that is our story till now. We live about twenty minutes from downtown L.A., in a little town (little by L.A. standards that is). We enjoy life here, it is certainly full and busy, but there are so many beautiful places in California and we try to take advantage of the state we live in. The weather here is pretty nice all year but the summertime, June through October, is very hot.

We hope you enjoy our story and it isn't too long.

Elaine: "The Hospital staff came to me and said Mark had to be baptised "...within the hour". Tony had left the Hospital just an hour before and I could not contact him. A silver cup was placed on his incubator and the minister performed the baptism rites through holes in the sides". Mark was later transferred to Booth Hall Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed as having a "twisted bowel". From a birth weight of 8lbs 4ozs Mark was down to 6lbs when he was operated on at four weeks old. The operation was a success and Mark was able to leave hospital at 3 months old but still weighing only 7lbs. Mark still carries the scares of his operation - eight stitches on his stomach plus the marks of his intravenous incisions on his arms and ankles.

He was baptized in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, Saturday 30th December 1972. Religion: Church of England.(30)
