William JANES, born 1610 in (Kirkland, Cambridgeshire) England; came to New England in 1637; of New Haven, Conn., 1636-56; of Northampton 1657, where he was recorder, schoolmaster, and teaching elder; an engager for Northfield, and there at the First Settlement; in his office of teaching elder, he preached to the settlers, congregated under the shelter of the famous Northfield Oak, at the First Settlement. He did not return at the Second Settlement, but died at Northampton, April 20, 1690.

He married in England, (possibly at Kirkland), Mary ____, who died April 4, 1662, married second to Hannah, daughter of Thomas Bascom(b), widow of John Broughton. She died March, 1681. Marriage date was 20 November 1662.

William Janes was a prominent citizen and beloved school-teacher at New Haven for 17 years, where he received 10 pounds per annum for his services.

Finally, the good people of Wethersfield, invited him to come to them, "only by consent of the brethren," at N.H., as their schoolmaster, and probably offered him better inducements in the way of salary.

At a General Court at New Haven Oct. 3, 1650, it was propounded that a schoolmaster might be provided whether the town would allow any salary to Mr. Janes for Mr. Janes for teaching school.

May 19, 1651. For the incouragement of Mr. Janes in teaching school the court ordered he should have 10 pounds for this year, etc.

Oct. 8, 1651. Mr. Janes informed the town that he is offered a considerable maintenance to go to Wethersfield to teach school.

Oct. 20, 1651. Mr. Janes desired to know of the town if they would not give him liberty to go to Wethersfield to accept of the proffer made him to teach school, for he hears there is another coming hither. He had liberty granted.

He was in Wethersfield, however, only a few months, and returned to N.H., and finally (1656), removed to Northampton, Mass.
