Notes for SALEDIA ABIGAIL HAMPTON:
Saleta Hampton Coleman was a midwife and much in demand by the families living in and around Port William (Carrollton) Kentucky. She missed her family in Virginia and in 1870, she and John traveled back to homestead in Lewis Township, near Roanoke. The following is a copy of a letter that Saleta wrote to another member of the family. (the original letter is gone, but several family members retain copies). I have corrected some of the original spelling to make reading easier (Suzanne Shephard, great-great granddaugher).

We have packed up the youngens (Laura, Nancy, Stephen & John, Jr.) and are headed out to Cousin Oscar Hamptons'. Pat and Mike (oxen) aught to pull that old wagon right good. John tooked his old dog Trigger with us sos he could hunt for food along the way. I am ataking a young cow, my sow hog, my chickens, my feather beds, crockery and such . Also Johns tools and plows. John raised a fit but I made him let me take me some rootings from our fruit trees too. We should be right well off when we git there.

(excerpt from additional letter)

long hard travel. Rained for a week or two and last night them painters (panthers) squalled all night. One jumped on the wagon and John shot him. He was black and I am agoing to make John a pair of breeches outn his hide. (end of legible portion of letter)

After they arrived in Virginia, they built a small cabin on rich, fertile (but swampy) land near a large waterfall. The children were sick all winter with colds and so, in the next fall they decided to journey back to Kentucky. Mary Elizabeth Coleman was born in the wagon across from what is now Madison, Indiana, on the trip home.
While in Virginia, Saleta became friends with an old circuit rider doctor named William O'Butler. O'Butler gave her some of his medical books to take back to Kentucky with her and she in turn, named one of her sons after him.

Notes for NANCY W. COLEMAN:
Aunt "Nannys" obituary:
MRS. NANCY COLEMAN WEBSTER DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
End Comes to Good Woman Friday Morning After Much Suffering

The community was grieved but not shocked to learn that Mrs. Nancy W. Webster, nee Coleman age 67 years, ill for the past two years and confined to her bed for the past nine weeks, had passed on to her great reward last Friday morning, October 10, at 10:45 o'clock.
Mrs. Webster was a woman of sterling character. Her many deeds of kindness and acts of charity had endeared her to everyone who knew her. Never having any children of her own, she nonetheless possessed a deep maternal instinct. She reared several orphan children, among them her beloved neice, Mrs. Lillian Osborn, who survives her.
Mrs. Webster alliliated with the Methodist church in her early youth and remained a loyal and conscientious member until her death.
Mrs. Webster was twice married, her first husband having been Henry C. Minish, who died April 24, 1903. Her second husband, Zachariah Taylor Webster, whom she married in March 1907, preceded her to the grave six years ago.
She is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Will Williams of Carroll County; Mrs. Harry Grimes of Carrollton; Mrs. J. W. Jewell and Mrs. C. H. Dunn of Louisville and Mrs. Will Jones of Anderson, Ind. She is also survived by five brothers Steven, John and William Coleman of Louisville; Walter Coleman of Carrollton; Peter Coleman, and a stepson, Charles Webster, of Palestine, Ill. Mrs. Webster was predeceased by one brother, Daniel Coleman, one sister, Mrs. Lawson Williams, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Alford Coleman of Carroll county.
Funeral services presided over by the Reverand Dr. Banks, were held at the home Sunday afternoon, after which the body was laid to rest in the local cemetary (I.O.O.F., Carrollton). A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance.
Someone has said that: "When the light of life goes out, there's a new radiance in eternity which somehow relieves the darkness left behind".
Truly, that may be said of her. The memories of her life of Christian service shall be an inspiration to those left behind. Her rest is deserved.
