Notes for SAMUEL BURLEW:

SAMUEL BELLEW - Enlisted as a Private at Newport, Ky. in Sept. 1814 in Capt. James Ellis' Company of the 16th Regiment, Kentucky Militia. Discharged at Fort Malden, Upper Canada in March 1815. His discharge, although damaged, states in part:

"This is to certify that Samuel Belew, a private soldier in my company, has served a six-month tour of duty in the 16th Regt. Kentucky Militia in the service of the United States commanded by Maj. Joseph ??? and is entitled to draw twenty-one rations at any military post between this and his place of residence it being Pendleton County, Kentucky, three hundred and twenty miles from his place of discharge. Given under my hand at Fort Malden, Upper Canada..."

Soldier died 24 May 1871. Resided at Boston Station, Pendleton Co. at the time of death. He was married on 29 Nov. 1810 in Pendleton Co. by Thomas Griffing to Lydia Ellis. She claimed his pension after his death. He received a bounty land warrant of 80 acres in 1855 for his services. Their youngest son, Henry Belew, attempted to claim a pension based on his father's service in March 1897 while residing at Denver, Colorado.

He married ELIZABETH RUSH April 01, 1803 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, daughter of THOMAS RUSH. She was born 1778 in Albermarle Co., Virginia, and died August 12, 1870 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.

The following information came from a letter sent from James C. Moule, Washington, D.C. to Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio on January 21, 1998. This is a copy of that letter:

"I recently purchased Janet Pease's abstracted marriage records of Pendleton County, Kentucky. When I saw the marriage record for Elizabeth Rush and William Ellis in 1803, it started me thinking. After having looked at a lot of marriage bonds, it seems that most commonly the bondsman was the father of the bride or, if he was dead, the brother of the bride. If not that, the bondsman was often the brother-in-law of the bride. The bondsman for the marriage of Elizabeth Rush and William Ellis was George Turner. If Elizabeth was the sister of John and Peter, I would have expected the bondsman to be Peter or John Rush. Since that was not the case, it seemed that Elizabeth Rush was probably unrelated. Then I remembered that I had been studying the Turners and looked up my records. George Turner was also from Albemarle County, Virginia, and was John Rush's brother-in-law. (George Turner married Anna Maupin, sister of Margaret Maupin, John Rush's wife.) While the evidence is only circumstantial, I am now inclined to agree with you that the mysterious Elizabeth Rush of Pendleton County was probably John and Peter's sister."

Another interesting possibility linking Elizabeth Rush as the sister of John and Peter Rush was found by Barbara Rush Jenkins. Elizabeth Rush Ellis' daughter Sarah married Ambrose Fields on June 21, 1831. On the marriage bond (from Janet Pease's "Kentucky County Court Records, Pendleton County, KY"), the bondsman listed was John S. Rush, the grandson of John Rush and Margaret Maupin. Sarah Ellis was the first cousin once removed of John S. Rush, making it highly probable at this point that Elizabeth "Betsy" Rush was in fact the sister of John and Peter Rush.

Barbara Rush Jenkins has in her possession a copy of an article from "The Falmouth Outlook" on the Ellis Genealogy, taken from the library in Cynthiana, Kentucky. On page two of the article, the writer Hayden Ellis stating that he was the grandson of William Ellis, wrote down the following on March 1, 1934:

"William, the second son of Rhodum Ellis, was born December 31, 1780 and died July 22, 1870. He was married to Elizabeth Rush (misspelled as "Rust" by the Falmouth Outlook) in 1803. She was a cousin to Thomas Rush (misspelled as "Rust" again), who lived on the east side of Licking River opposite Catawba Station." We know that the Marriage records in Pendleton County, Kentucky transcribe the marriage of William Ellis to Betsy Rush, not Rust. The original bond book in the Pendleton County Courthouse bears this out. .

"William N. Buckner, farmer and stock-raiser, Liberty Township, was born in

Bracken County, Kentucky, September 15, 1827, son of Thomas and Matilda

(Hanson) Buckner, also natives of Kentucky. Thomas Buckner was a son of

Philip and Tabitha Buckner, the former a native of Virginia and of German

ancestry, the latter a native of Maryland and of German-Irish ancestry; her

father was John Hanson, a native of Maryland. Our subject passed his

early life on the farm and attended the early subscription schools in the

primitive log cabin. He was married January 16, 1851, to Miss Amelia M.

Yelton, daughter of Charles and Amelia (Gosney) Yelton, the former a

native of Virginia, and the latter of German descent. After his marriage

Mr. Bruckner followed farming until 1855, when he came to this county and

purchased 40 acres of heavily timbered land on section 10, Liberty

Township. He sold this land and purchased eighty acres on section 18,

this being also heavy-timbered. He cleared and improbed his last purchase,

and has added to it from time to time until he now has 320 acres. Mr. and Mrs.

Buckner have had nine children -- John T., Charles N., Millie J., wife of Joseph

Tharlkill, Missouri E., Martha Ann, wife of Byron H. Prible, George W., Miami M.,

Francis Marion and Benjamin F. Mr. Bruckner is a self-made man. By his own

industry and good management he has acquired a good property, and his

family is surrounded with all the comforts of life. Himself and wife and four

E. P. WILLIAMS, a native of Pendleton County, Ky., and a son of Pope

and Elizabeth (Kirby) Williams, was born near where the town of Butler

now stands August 8, 1815. Pope Williams, a farmer and stone-mason by

trade, was a native of Virginia. Mrs. Elizabeth Williams was born in

Maryland, and was a daughter of Enoch Kirby. E. P. Williams was

educated in the Flour Creek Schoolhouse, in Pendleton County, and

followed farming on his father's farm until the death of the latter,

when he bought out the other heirs to the property, and became the

owner of 500 acres, which he has divided among his children, reserving

only 56 acres for his home, upon which he has large buildings; he has

raised a great deal of stock. February 6, 1840, he married Miss Julia

Ellis, a native of Pendleton County, born September 7, 1822, and a

daughter of William Ellis, a farmer. Her mother was a Miss Rush before

marriage, and her paternal grandparents were natives of Virginia. Of

the eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Williams four are living: Mary

Jane, born December 22, 1840, who married Thomas Yelton, of Pendleton

County, November 25, 1856; Sarah Elizabeth, born October 29, 1843, and

married, December 24, 1860, Frank Bird, a native of Kenton County, who

was born in 1836, a son of Thomas Bird; Nancy, born March 16, 1848,

married, in 1866, William Yelton, a farmer, who was born in 1839, a son

of John Yelton, of Pendleton County; the fourth child of E. P. Williams

was born December 26, 1862, and November 28, 1881, married A. J. Grant,

Oliver enlisted in the Union army - the 16th Indiana Infantry, at the start of the Civil War. At the end of his service to that battalion, he reenlisted in the 51st Illinois volunteer infantry as a private and served until almost the close of the war. He was discharged due to disabilities. While serving with the Provost Marshal in Nashville, TN, in the final days of the war, he met Ann Elizabeth Browning, daughter of Rev. W. H. Browning and Elizabeth Pyle Browning. They married in Gallatin, TN, April 25, 1865, even though her parents objected to her marrying a Union soldier.
