The Origin of the Name Cudjo

by Hanna Anderson

The name Cudjo has its origin among the Akan people in West Africa. According to Akan naming practices, children receive the name of the day of the week on which they are born. Cudjo is the name of a male born on a Monday. This naming practice came to America through the enslaved Africans taken here, and the name Cudjo survived at first as a first name, and then as a last name until today.
