William m. ? (b.c. 1668, Darby, County Kerry, Ireland ^fg). ^jc Some descendants claim that John's father was William CULBERTSON, who was one of the Scotch Covenanters, who took advantage of the opportunity given Scotsmen to settle in North Ireland, during the reign of James II of England, and who emigrated to County Derry between 1665-1687. It is interesting to note that one of his brothers settled in Omagh, County Tyrone, where some DENNY families also settled. It is stated that William CULBERTSON was one of the defenders of Londonderry in the dreadful siege of 1689. ^dg 1945 version, pp. 1-9. Others of the family think John's father may have been John CULBERTSON, who was banished from Ayrshire, Scotland in 1670. John CULBERTSON first appears on tax records in Pennsylvania in 1713. He disappears from the tax books after 1723. He left no will, nor is there a record of adminstration of his estate. There are no deeds to or from him, nor is there any land warrant to him. However, many early settlers failed to get warrants for their lands. He is believed to be the John CULBERTSON who was killed by Indians at Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in November 1756. He had 4 sons and 4 daughters. ^dg

The author said that there was a CULBERTSON family living at Newton Stewart, County Tyrone, Ireland, who may be descended from one of the CULBERTSON sons. He was referring to William CULBERTSON, who emigrated from Scotland to County Derry, near Londonderry, Ireland, c. 1665-1687. One of William's brothers settled in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland, and another at Ballygan near Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland. See Joseph CULBERTSON The settlement at Ballygan was called "CULBERTSON's Row." These brothers were Scotch Covenanters who were driven from Scotland during the reign of James II, of England. ^w1 Andrew CULBERTSON's will probated 25 Aug 1747, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Will Book A-7-1. His son, Samuel, was his bondsman and the administrator of his estate, filed in 1746, which consisted of about 1900 acres, almost three square miles, and an inventory of his estate filed in 1747 showed its value to be $4,000, a very large sum for those days. The division of his estate was made in Cumberland County, in 1750, and named his children. ^br

"CULBERTSON, ROBERT. Kennett [Township]. [Written:] March 21, 1762. [Recorded:] May 3, 1762. To wife Jean 1/3 of all estate real and personal absolutely. To son Samuel £20 and all he now owes me and negro lad James on condition that he shall take my wife Jane and all his sisters living at my decease into Cumberland County and take care of them until my wife's decease and his sisters marriage. To son in law Alexander PORTER 5 shillings. To each of my grandchildren by my daughter Elizabeth PORTER 5 shillings. To daughters Jean, Mary, Martha, Isabella and Sarah CULBERTSON all remainder of estate to be divided and paid to each of them on day of their marriage. Executors: Wife Jean and son Samuel. Witnesses: Joseph BENNETT, Joseph MUSGRAVE, George CRAGHEAD. Letters to Jean, the other renouncing."
