Lilly-Lilley-Lillie

Records of William son of Edmund Lilly

William Lilly is named as a brother of John Lilly in John’s will which also refers to Edmund Lilly as father, so William’s father is proven.

William Lilly, born perhaps ca. 1732, while his family was living in Goochland County, Virginia.  William died before 24 April 1809 when his will was admitted to probate.(1)  He married Elizabeth Paulett, ca. 1762, when their first known child was born. Elizabeth was born ca. 1739 possibly in Hanover County, Virginia. Elizabeth Lilly, widow of William Lilly, probably died ca. 1823, because she disappeared from the tax lists.(2)  In the Fluvanna County, Virginia Land Tax Books, Elizabeth is noted as the widow of Wm, presumably because there was already another Elizabeth Lilly on the tax rolls who was the widow of Armiger Lilly senior. She is listed in the land book up to and including the 1823 book. In 1824 William Lilly is listed as having the same land in the same location with the same description.  So she must have died by then.  Probably she died in 1823.  Earlier books are dated March to March. (3)
James Lilly, son of Thomas Lilly, says his paternal grandparents were Wm and Elizabeth (Pollett) Lilly. He also says that William was of English Descent and Elizabeth was a native of France. (4)  I don’t think that this is true.  There were a lot of English Paulets, perhaps of Norman descent.
William Lilly and Elizabeth Paulette appear as the mother of Ann Lilly, born 1764 in the Douglas Register. This is their first known child so perhaps they were married about 1762. She was most likely born in Hanover County. See notes on her family. They appear in 1734 in Hanover, and in 1749 in Louisa County, Virginia.  Louisa County was formed in 1742 from Hanover County so they probably did not move.  The counties changed around them.

William may be older than originally thought.  He appears in Anson County, North Carolina with his brother, John Lilly. See pages on John Lilly for more on North Carolina. He witnessed a deed  in 1754.  William Lilly, John Lilly, and Edmund Lilly appear in the same document.

Land conveyed by heirs of William Lilly
William Lilly's residual legatees: Elizabeth Lilly, relict of William Lilly; Edmund Lilly and Cecily his wife; William Lilly;
Armiger Lilly and Rebecca, his wife; Thomas Brown and Nancy his wife of Fluvanna County; Thomas Lilly and Docia, his wife of Ross Co, Ohio; Robert Geilbert and Sally his wife formerly Sally Lilly of Nelson County, Virginia. These heirs acknowledged that 5 acres of which William had died rested with legal title, but in his lifetime by verbal contract or agreement had sold the same to Lawrence Shepherd and died not having made Shepherd any deed. Shepherd afterwards conveyed land to Nathaniel E Norment.
Conveyed with consent of Lawrence Shepherd, dated 27 September 1816. Land on Ballinger's Creek borders: Walter Timberlake and creek. ----Fluvanna Co, VA Deed  Bk 6 p 679 [apparently part of that land purchased from Strange in 1790. Note that John does not appear in this and nothing is said about a wife or children but see Volume 7 page 732 where John's widow signs. Philip and/or Elizabeth Brown also fail to appear. Both John Lilly and Betsy Brown are listed in William's will.

All of the following land was owned by a William Lilly.  I am not sure where it all was.  Some of these are possibly owned by another William Lilly.

Children of William Lilly and Elizabeth Paulette:
I.    Ann Lilly, daughter of William Lilly and Elizabeth Pollet, born 26 September 1764, Christened 6 July 1765, St. James-Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia.(9) The Douglas Register lists birth date, Christening date, parents from Christening Records including mother's maiden name. He listed Christening date as marriage date because he had not married William and Elizabeth himself.  This was his habit.
Nancy, wife of Thomas Brown, is listed as a daughter in William Lilly's will. Marriage Bond: James Brown & Ann Lilly, 4 June 1789; William Lilly security.  The name James may be an error or a middle name.  This is the only Ann or Nancy Lilly in the Fluvanna County records.  So it is very likely the correct marriage in spite of the name discrepancy for him. No other marriage found in County for a Thomas Brown.  Other sources omit this record so no comparison is possible. I wonder if the transcriber misread Thos for Jas.  These abbreviations can be difficult.  I have not seen the original document.
1810 Census of Fluvanna County, Virginia p 281:  Thomas Brown 01001-00001-05

II.    Elizabeth "Betsy" Lilly, born bef 1769 in she was over 21 at marriage, died bef 1816.  She is listed in her father's will dated 1809, but neither she nor her husband are in the 1810 Fluvanna County, Virginia census.  Neither signs the 1816 deed where she is not listed as a residuary legatee.
The two marriage record sources have slightly different information so I am both of them.
Marriage Bond: Philip Brown & Elizabeth Lilly, 7 February 1791; Lawrence Shepherd and Thomas Brown Securities.
Elizabeth Lilly married Phillip Jacob Brown, 8 February 1791 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, minister: Wm Baskett.(11)

John Lilly married Alley Furbush, January 1795 in Fluvanna County, Virginia, Minister: Wm Baskett.(15)

1814 Land Tax Book of Fluvanna County, Virginia shows Estate of John Lilly owning 100 acres NE of Courthouse on Both sides of Ballinger's Creek adjacent to Sam Hardesty and Elizabeth Lilly.  In 1813, John Lilly, not his estate, was listed for this property.(18)
Vol 7 p 732 Fluvanna Co, VA Deed Book: 6 Dec 1816 Alley Lilly, widow of John Lilly, dec'd late of Fluvanna Co, VA, Walter Timberlake of same witness that the said Alley Lilly for $106 relinquishes all her dower right as widow of John Lilly in a certain tract devised by Wm Lilly dec'd to s'd John Lilly by his last will.  115 acres on Ballinger's Creek. 1/3 right to land.  Desc:  Timberlake's line, Norment's line, Spanish Oak near Spring, Barker's line.

V.    Edmund Lilly, born before 1778 if he was over 21 at marriage. Edmund Lilly married Sisley Loven, 15 February 1799, in Fluvanna County, Virginia.  Minister Wm Baskett.(19) Marriage Bond dated 13 February 1799, Bondsman: Phillip J Brown. (20)

VIII.    William Lilly, born before 1786.  He married a Martha Weldy, date unknown.
Deed Book 8 p 263, Fluvanna County, Virginia: Wm Lilly and Martha, his wife and Robert Brown and Ann, his wife, sell 80 acres to Wm Weldy of Fluvanna Co.  Said tract property of Wm Weldy dec'd, said Martha and Ann, daughters of Said Wm Weldy, dec'd. Dated 8 May 1819.
Nellie Raber letters say he may have stopped in Madison County, Ohio for a while and gone to Estil County, Kentucky.-Desc Mrs James Sears of La Platte, MO. He married Martha Weldy, married aft 1809. His wife is not named in the 1816 deed so he may not have had a living wife at that point.  There were two William Lilly's, one was the son of Armiger.  He married Lucy Bybee and his father, Armiger Lilly, gave consent.  We can tell them apart by their wives. William and his wife, Lucy, seem to leave the area, while this Williams stays. Or so it appears.
