Lilly Records in England
John Lilly I
born ca. 1607 in England, died between 1642 and 1646
1607 John Lilly was born about 1607 according to
this deposition where he stated that he was aged 30. We are
indebted to the
habit in the early colonies of requiring someone who was giving
evidence to state their age. But the exact date is unclear. See a
complete discussion of this
important piece of evidence. February 1639 Deposition referring
to the ship, Elizabeth.
He may have come to the colonies about 1637. His exact year of birth is
not clear in these records, but I think that we can be pretty sure he
said he was born between 1607 and 1609. Now, when he was actually born
might not be when he said.
1642
John Lylley
patent for 350 acres in what was Kingston Parish, after 1651, part
of Gloucester
County, 350 acres.
In 1791, this became part of Mathews County. John received a grant of land
for bringing himself,
his wife and servants to the colonies. Therefore, he had married
before he came to the colonies. His son, John, named in his estate
records, must have been born in Virginia. If he had been born
before they
came, his father could have applied for additional land on that basis.
We can assume that his father would not have passed up a
chance
for more land. Since he probaby arrived around 1637, he
married
before this date in England.

Our
Search
So we are looking in England for a John Lilly or
Lilley or Lylley etc, who was born between 1607 and 1609 in
England, left England
for America
sometime around 1637, and married in England. He probably married
a Mary Moulson.
See Moulson-Lilly-Reade
for more on
this.
I need to point out here that we
do not know if any of the following records refer to OUR John Lilly.
I am simply gathering information in one place so that we can
analyze it. But I confess, I like this first one. This
John would have been aged 30 in 1639. The database is not specific
about what records from this church survived.

We are indebted to
Libbie Griffin <[email protected]> for the following set
of Lilly in England records. She was visiting in England and took
some of her precious time to send us this. She says that all of this is
from the Lincolnshire Archives.
Lincolnshire
Spalding,
England parish
register:
Several Lilly marriages
Pinchbeck, England parish register: One marriage Moulson/Malson: Joane Malson m. Robert Dercy, 1593
Spalding church building dates from the 1200s.
Pinchbeck is 2.25 miles north of Spalding! Boston is about ten miles north.
A History of Spalding by E.H. Gooch, publ. The Spalding Free Press Co. Ltd., Spalding, 1940
Good historical survey, lists his sources. Would be very valuable for describing events around them in a book.
My quick review didn’t turn up Lilly names in the 16th century or early 17th.
By 1800s William and Robert Lilly were gentlemen; living in Lincolnshire, perhaps in Boston; not Spalding.
A handwritten transcription of Spalding Parish Records beginning 1650:
Christenings:
Aug 25 1650: John son of John Lilly
Nov. 17 1650: Matthew son of Matthew Lilly
Oct 3, 1652: Bridget, the daughter of Matthew Lilly, cooper
Oct 30, 1652: Margaret the daughter of John Lilly
Jan 20 1652: John son of John Lilly, laborer
Feb 24 1652: “John the son of Robert Meaddows (sic), cooper”
I
stopped after the first few pages; archivist gave me the original
Spalding Parish Register from 1538 to 1670 to read. Needle in haystack
time. But I should find out if the Mormon’s have this on
microfilm and take time to read it.

There are a number of John
Lilly's in the probate records. They seem to be the wrong place.
However: This is a maybe. It could be dated a few years
after he died.

Just in case we are looking for a
father for John Lilly I.
John
Lilly married 11 November 1602, Eleinor Dolby at Kirk Deighton, All
Saints
Probably a Myth but possibly Fact?
I do not know the parents of John Lilly I.
Ancestral File: John
Lilly, married Isabele
Dorlaston, had two children, William Lilly, Christened 1 April 1604,
and John Lily. This John Lilly [jr] married a Margaret [sic]
Moulsen,
and was the progenitor of the John Lilly of Virginia family.
According to Julius Whiting Lilly who has a low reliabilty rating:
“John Lysley and
Isabell Dorlaston were married Nov 24, 1599, they had two sons:
William was baptised January 11, 1600
John was baptised April 1,
1604…”
– citing “The English
Parish Register of Tamworth, County of Staffordshire”
As far as I know the first person
to publish this
was Julius Whiting Lilly. Unfortunately, he has taken so many liberties
with facts that I cannot think that this is of any use at all. If
someone can find an actual record of this send it to me.
Otherwise, I will consider it one of his myths or errors,
whatever you prefer to call it.
There is in fact a record of the
24 November 1599 marriage of Isabele Dorlaston to John Lysley at
Tamworth, Staffordshire. This is on FamilySearch.org extracted
records, batch number M01006-2. I can't find the birth records in this
database although it may be there. It is time consuming to
search. It is not there with the spelling of Lilly or Lysley.
I don't know what to think about this.
