This page has information on various Lilly families who do not
seem to
be related to
any of the several Lilly Families in Virginia. Most
of them are descended
from the
massive New England Lilly Group, most of whom are spelled Lillie.
There are a few additional ones. I have them here just for
my convenience to try to keep the lines
separate. Since I have this information, I wanted to
make available to other long suffering Lilly Researchers.

John Lillie of Fort Wayne, was born in
Scotland, September 12, 1847, the son of John and Jane (Fowler) Lillie.
The parents were natives of Scotland, the father born October 16,1819,
the mother about 1821. The family came to the United States in June,
1850, and settled at Fort Wayne. The mother died at Wells county, this
state, in 1852. In 1856 the father engaged in the lime and stone
business at Fort Wayne, and in 1875 removed to Columbus, Ohio, where he
died May 21, 1885. John Lillie is the second of five children of these
parents, of whom three are now living. He received a common school
education. In 1872 he became a member of the firm of James Lillie &
Co., and in 1883 became sole proprietor. In January, 1884, he admitted
Charles A. Munson as a partner in the manufacture of Huntington lime,
with their works located at Lillie, Huntington county. The firm also
deals in cement, plaster, sewer pipe, etc., and does a large business.
Mr. Lillie is a valued citizen, is a representative business man, and
is widely known as one of the most prominent Masons of Indiana. He has
attained the thirty-second degree, is past eminent commander, Knights
Templar, has been grand secretary of the grand lodge of Perfection, A.
A. S. R., at Fort Wayne, since its organization March 12, 1887, and is
one of the trustees of the Masonic Temple. His prominence in these
fraternal connections is a valuable testimonial to his fine social
qualities and worth as a man. The esteem in which he is held by those
who know him best is shown by his having been elected repeatedly to
represent his ward in the city council, though he is a firm republican,
and his is the leading democratic ward in the city. Mr. Lillie was
married March 9, 1871, to Kate Williams, of this city, who was born in
Canada in 1851.
Kansas from Kentucky
Benjamin Franklin Lilly was born by about 1820 in Kentucky. But the earliest records of him are in Kansas starting in 1854.

Edward S. Lilly, a member of the late firm of Edward S. Lilly &
Co., and a prominent dealer in hardware, iron and steel, is a native of
Adams County, Penn. He was born in 1851, and is the son of Joseph and
Catherine (Reily) Lilly. The father was born July 4, 1814. His
ancestors came from England to America in 1730, and located in
Pennsylvania, in which State and Maryland the family have since
resided. They followed woolen manufacturing just 100 years from 1730.
The mother was born in 1816. and is still living.' Her father
immigrated to America from the North of Ireland in 1785. Edward S. was
reared and educated in his native State and in Maryland. He engaged in
agricultural pursuits until he removed from Pennsylvania to Cape
Girardeau County in 1871. He was employed as clerk in Philip Reily's
hardware store for nine years. This hardware establishment was founded
by James I . Reily in 1848. The firm as above mentioned, Leo Doyle
being the other member, succeeded Philip Reily on August 9, 1880, but
on the 1st of January the partnership was dissolved. Mr.Lilly
succeeding to the business. In 1881 Mr. Lilly was united in marriage
with
Nattie Albert, a native of Cape Girardeau. Their union has been blessed
by three children—two sons and one daughter.
[Note from June: Joseph was a descendant of Samuel Lilly, see
Samily Lilly born 1699, England. Pennsylvania.]
North
Carolina
Lou Poole, a long time researcher of
the
Lilly Family in North Carolina, believes that there is no connection
between this group of Lillys in Chowan County and his own group in
Anson County. There was much immigration from England to NC
in the late 1600s. If you look at a map, the two areas are
not very close together. The earliest record here of a Lilly is
John Lilly, witness in an estate record in 1691. Edmund Lilly of
Anson County, NC did not move to NC until nearly 60 years later.
John Lilly is unlikely to be descended from the York/Gloucester
County Lilly family because each generation has a known John in it.
John was the son of Thomas, will dated 1712. So this group
is likely to have been a different immigrant family.

FamilySearch.org
has a set of the North Carolina estate records on line. The
indexed database consists of images of the original estate records.
I do not know if this database includes all surviving records,
but I was told that it does.

There are two sets of records for pre
1800 Lilly's here. One is for Thomas Lilly who apparently died
ca. 1743, who left records in Chowan and Craven. The second is
from a John Lilly died ca. 1767, left an estate in Currituck County,
North Carolina.
If these are your people, you can read
these on line at the above site. As far as we know there is no
relationship between the Lilly family of Anson County and this group.
I would very much like to hear from a descendant of this family
with a view to a YDNA test.
