Counties, Virginia
William
Lilly. son of Edmund
Lilly, and William's wife, Elizabeth Pollet. Her name is in the
consent form for her son, Armiger Lilly, to marry Rebecca Hutchinson.
Armiger
Lilly, son of William Lilly and his wife, Rebbecca Hutchinson moved to
Ross County, Ohio.[parents
of the Lilly children who married into the Cullumber and Clover
families in Franklin and Madison Counties, Ohio.]
Armiger Lilly and Rebecca Hutchinson married 23 Dec 1800, Fluvanna Co,
VA Consent: parents William Lilly and Elizabeth Pollet.

Armiger needed
permission to marry so was under 21 .
Elizabeth Pollet was the daughter
of Thomas Pawlett and Semiramis
Johnson. Semiramis Johnson was the daughter of Thomas Johnson.
There were several men by that name, but ours may have been the
son of Edward Johnson. This we can prove. Anything past
that is hopeful speculation. However, I have gathered here
all the research that I have so far on the Pawlet and the Johnson
families. Perhaps someone has a tidbit which will tie this
together.
There were
Pawletts in Jamestown but I
have come to the sad conclusion
that although we might be related to them, we are probably not
descended from the
Pawletts in Jamestown. However, before I decided that, I
collected an enormous quantity of information on this family. I
may turn out to be wrong so am keeping it here for your reading
pleasure. The only person mentioned here who is even possible as
an ancestor is Chideck
Pawlett listed as a brol in the will of Thomas Paulett. This would be
brother in law. However, that could have meant what we would call
a
half brother. Terminology about these things was different then. There is also a small chance that we are
descended from his brother. It is such a long shot I have not
tried to trace him further. For about all that exists about these
men in Jamestown see Paulettes in

Problems.
The early spelling of the name varied. Please note
that correct
spelling is
a Twentieth Century concept and literacy was in short supply in the
early days of the colonies.
The Thomas Pawlett who arrived in
Jamestown in 1618, was the grandson of William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester,
lord treasurer. He died 1572
aged
97,
with 103 descendants. He was descended from Edward I. For
much more on this noble family see Marquess of Winchester.

Johnson
Problems
I have attempted to include here all known public
sources on Edward Johnson, and his son Thomas Johnson, Thomas's
daughter
Semiramis who was the wife of Thomas Paulett, father of Elizabeth
Paullet who was the wife of William Lilly. I have done this
because in most cases the families are from burned counties so that the
public material is strictly limited in nature. The only other
possibilities for research would be family records or records out of
other counties showing a connection. Since information is so limited I
have
included all mentions of the surname within the county in which the
ancestor was living. I have noted all occurrences of
Paulet, any spelling, New Kent, Hanover, Louisa Co up to 1780. I
have noted all occurrences of Johnson in New Kent Co, Hanover, Louisa
up to about 1745. I have also noted all occurrences in surviving parish
record books for these times in these areas.
Edward Johnson was in New Kent Co in 1680. New Kent Co was formed from
York and James City Counties in 1654. New Kent County was unlucky
enough to lose all of its records in various fires, first in 1787 the
courthouse burned, then the remaining records were burned in the
infamous 1865 Richmond fire. The only extant public record
relating to the 17th and early 18th centuries are the Parish Register
and Vestry book for St Peter's Parish. Each of the early parishes
was required to keep meticulous records of births, marriages and
deaths. However, few of these registers have survived to this
day. Luckily, St Peter's registry book as well as the vestry book
survived. The introduction of the reprint quoted below says that St
Peter's was founded arond 1678 as a division of Blissland Parish.
Since the records in the register start earlier, they must have been
filled in at the beginning.

Parish, Va 1680-1787, reprinted by the

The vestry book of St Peter's Parish has also survived. Most of
the vestry book is taken up by lists of processioning.
Processioning was an attempt to make the boundaries of each person's
land so well known that no one would be able to change the markers.
This was supposed to avoid long expensive law suits. So a group
of citizens would make a procession around everyone's land. The
vestry books note that certain individuals were sent out to procession
the lands of certain individuals. The individuals returned and
gave a statement that they had done so or had not been able to because
they could not find the boundaries. Processioning was usually
done every 4 years. This material is useful in trying to tell who
lived in certain areas at certain times. There are no vital
records in these vestry books. The records of the vestry book start
about 1685. The following entries are taken from the Vestry Book
and Register of St Peter's Parish New Kent and James City Counties, VA
1684-1786, Va State Library, Richmond, 1937.
p 21 At Vestry dated 4 May 1689, Edwd Johnson was called as a

some having checks after them and some not. It appears to be a list of
free holders. It is not labeled. The names of Nathan
Johnson, Robert Johnson, Wm Johnson are on this undated list.
There is a check after the names of the first two names only.
The records of Blissland Parish from which St Peter's was formed are
incomplete. In The Vestry
Record Book of Blisland [Blissland] Parish, New
Kent and James City Co, Va 1721-1786, C. Chamberlayne, Library
Board,
Richmond, 1935, there are only the following mentions of
Johnsons.
p xlv A letter of grievances was given to the English government on 29
Jan 1677. Edward Johnson signed this letter. The letter is
known as the "Blisland Grievances." This was shortly after
Bacon's rebellion which was also involved with this area. The
early records of James City were burned in the rebellion.

Hanover County, VA was created in 1721 from New Kent County.
Hanover County lost nearly all its early records in the 1865 fire at
Richmond "perpetrated by those Damn Yankee Troops".
The earliest public records concerning Hanover
County
now extant are the Land Patents which were state records. The
following mentions of Johnsons and Paullets can be found in Land
Patents and Grants in Hanover Co, VA 1721-1800, Charles Blunt IV, Pvt
Pub, Briarwood Publications, 1980. Patents were sales of land to
individuals by the King. Grants were sales to individuals by the
US Gov after the Revolution.

Do not forget in analyzing these records that the law of primogenture
was still in effect in Va until after the revolution. This means
that the eldest son was the legal heir of any individual. And if
an individual died without issue, the legal heir was the eldest
brother, not the parent. For this reason, a man might have legal
title to land which had belonged to his father yet nothing might show
up in the deed books for generations. That is, of course, if we
even have the deed books.
The first question that arises with this is how many Thomas Johnson's
we are dealing with in New Kent, Hanover, and Louisa Co. Working
backward, there is the Thomas Johnson purchasing land in 1752 from his
mother and brother. He is the son of Thomas Johnson who must have
died ca Jan 1734 because his widow Ann shows up in court on 6 Feb
1734. Ann Johnson later marries John Cosby. Thomas and
Ann's children were Nicholas, of age in 1734, Richard who is the second
son, James, Ann, Thomas, William. All of the children seem to be under
21 in 1734 except Nicholas. This would tend to make their father
ca 40 when he died. This age seems to fit the Thomas son of
Anthony Johnson born 1794. This cannot be the father of Semiramis
Johnson because he deeds the 200 acres on Stone Horse Creek to her in
Jun 1734.
We of course do not know the age of "our" Thomas Johnson.
However, he gave land to a married daughter in 1734. Whenever she
was born, he surely would have given her land only after she was
17 and her father was surely born by 1694. If Semeramis was not
the first child, the 1680 birth
date fits best. If Semiramis was the first child, then we have to
look at the Thomas born 1694. This is a possibility but it
clashes with the Thomas who died in 1734. The Thomas born 1714 is
too young to be either of the two Thomas's in question. Since we
have such limited information, there is no way to be absolutely sure of
parentage of Thomas Johnson. However, what we do have is
certainly highly suggestive that he was indeed the son of Edward and
Elizabeth Johnson born 1680.
There is absolutely nothing immediately visible in the records which
might indicate what Edward's wife's maiden name was. There is an
Elizabeth dying in 1725-6. This is unlikely to have been Edward's
wife. There was a poor woman named Elizabeth Johnson who had been
a charge on the Parish since 1702. There is a note in the vestry book
that she was buried in 1725-6 so this note is almost certainly the poor
woman. We have no reason to believe that Thomas had left his
mother to be a charge on the parish and indeed, it would hardly have
been possible. In addition, there are no records to even suggest
what Thomas's wife first name was, not to mention her maiden name.
It is not clear when Thomas Johnson died. In 1752 there is a
reference to the line of Capt Thomas Johnson. Our Thomas would
have been 72 by this time. I think it more likely that this is
the Thomas born in 1714. This is by no means certain.
Semiramis Johnson was probably dead by 1746 because her signature was
not on the deed. It is not clear that her signature would be
required for slaves but it was definately needed for the sale of land
although errors are possible. I am inclined to think that her
name came from her mother's family. The Johnsons in the parish records
and the deed records seem to have rather straightforward names.
Semiramis was an Assyrian queen who was supposed to have founded
Babylon. After a long reign, she vanished in the form of a dove; she
was thereafter worshiped as a deity. Her legend is probably based
on Sammuramat, regent of Assyria, 810-805 BC. If Thomas had been some
scholar who thought up this name, surely he would not have been
satisfied with mundane names for his other children. We do not
know if he had other children, however, there are no others with wild
names. I am therefore inclined to think that she may have been
named after her maternal grandmother. Unfortunately this does not
exactly help. I have not noticed any other similiar female names
or any other Semiramis in the records. There are any number of
wild male names. Epaphroditus Howle, for example.
Thomas Paulet sold more land more often than any other of our
ancestors. They seemed to buy and hold until children came of age
at which time he sold it to them. He first appears in the
record in 1731 with a patent which he sold in 1734. His wife receives
land from her father which he seems to hold on to. He sold some
other land in 1735 which he must have bought because he did not patent
it. He gets another patent in 1744. He sold another piece of land
in 1746. The locations of the land suggest that he moved farther
west from his original area. Owen's creek is about 20 miles west of
Stone Horse Creek. This is how he happens to end up in
Fredericksville Parish in Louisa Co. The indenture in
which he gave
his children slaves in 1750/52 is very odd. There is no reason to
believe that all of them were of age at that time. So one wonders
why he chose that particular time. I suspect he was either unwell
or looking at a second wife. And why did he happen to leave out
Ann Clarke? She may well have been the eldest child.
