According to family records compiled by my grandmother, Mattie Leila Reid Watts, these must have been:
James Watts, b. 2/25/1766 to James Watts (b. 1/6/1729 in Hanover Co., VA to John Watts and Elizabeth Foster, d. 2/16/1781) and Susannah Taylor (b. 2/26/1731 in New Kent Co., VA, d. 1/15/1806), m. 1787 to Priscilla Dendy of Laurens District, d. 4/25/1843.
John Watts must have been his brother, b. 1764, m. 1788 Margeret Pollard (b. 1764 in Pendleton District, SC), d. 10/13/1812.
I hope this helps.

Letter from Wells, Somerset, England concerning Cornelius Watts

This last month while I was at a family reunion, I spoke with another genealogist, Louise Holt, working on the line of Cornelius Watts of Wells, Somerset England. This Cornelius had two sons who immigrated to Virginia and are the forbears of many of the Virginia lines of Watts. For reference, his Will was printed in issue #17. Issue #35 also has references to Cornelius. Below is part of a letter sent to Louise from the City of Wells. Louise believed the name of Cornelius' wife was Ann Sheman. I have the name of Ann Esserman, myself with the reference being a marriage recorded in Church records. I have not seen this reference personally and do not have a film number but only the word of an unknown person. This letter is quite interesting and of interest to many of you who are descended from him. Louise pointed out to me the reference that Cornelius was listed as selling Tabacco. This probably was brought to England by his sons William and Edward. We know they made more than one trip back to England. I am most interested in hearing from those of you who are descended from Cornelius through Edward or William with a though on the maiden name of his wife Ann. Does anyone have a name with a source?

Cornelius Watts and his family

... As Cornelius Watts was a burgess I have found a little in the minute books of the Old City Corporation.

He was admitted to the freedom of the City on 7 September 1626. He was qualified to do so because he had married the daughter of a burgess, but the record does not give her name. Presumably this Ann Sherman whom he had married in 1614, according to Mrs. Holt. It is just possible, however, given the time lapse between 1614 and 1626 that Ann had died and that he had re-married.

If it was Ann Sherman there is a problem as the only Sherman recorded as a freeman is John Sherman, admitted in 1487, much too early to be Ann's father. She might have been a widow when she married Cornelius and it would be necessary to know her maiden name in order to identify her father.

William Sherman, who witnessed Cornelius' will in 1640 could not have been her father, as he was not a burgess, nor for the same reason, her uncle, or her first husband. He might have been a brother in law or a son by a first marriage if she was a widow when she married Cornelius.

In September 1627 Cornelius was made a chief burgess, that is, one of the governing body of the city and in January 1632/3 his name appears in a list of persons selling tabacco in Wells. He is described as a vintner.

By September 1635 he was no longer living in Wells, though where is not stated. This means he was no longer qualified to be a burgess and he offered to resign, if the city agreed, or he would come and live in Wells if he could get a house. In December his resignation was accepted and his name was removed from the list of burgesses. He no longer appears in the City records.

From Sebree Studies, pa. 134:

Another possibly child of Edward Watts was Robert Watts whose will was recorded 28 May 1741 in Orange Co. (Will book 1, pa. 155) Legatees were his brothers William and Thomas and a nephew, Thomas Watts. His brothers were named executors, they and Samuel Ball were witnesses. Heineman places this Robert Watts in the list of issue of Thomas Watts and Esther, but there is no evidence to recommend this placement.

Cornelius married Ann Esserman [2522] [MRIN: 881] in 1614 in Wells, Somerset, England. Ann was born in England.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 4 M    i. Edward Watts [2519] was born in 1620 in England and died in 1690 in Stafford Co, Va at age 70.

5 M    ii. William Watts [17146] was born about 1615 in Wells, Somerset Co., England and died about 1670 in Virginia about age 55.

General Notes: Notes for WILLIAM WATTS:
"A William Watts, whom we tentatively identify as this man, was transported to Virginia on the ship "Expedition" 20 Nov 1635. He settled in Charles City, Co., VA. July 30, 1637 he patented 75 acres of land on Queen's Creek (now known as York River) near Williamsburg, VA. He was associated with Richard Davis, who joined him in the land patent. John Wayne, according to the Virginia Land Office Records, was credited with transporting William Watts to Virginia."
In his book, Heineman believes William went back to England after his father's death but soon returned to America. He also believes William made several trips back and forth.

1649 - William Watts and his wife, Charity Watts, were transported to Virginia by Richard Kemp.

1650 May 22 - William Watts was transported to (old) Rappahannock Co., Va by Capt. Moore Fauntelroy, and received a headright there.

1652 Dec 6 - William Watts was transported to Gloucester Co., VA by Thomas Ball.

abt 1663 - William Watts sailed from Bristol, England, to Virginia on three separate occasions.

1669 - William Watts in Christ Church records in Middlesex Co., VA

abt 1670 - William Watts sailed from Bristol, England, to Virginia on the ship "Richard".

1673 Feb 16 - William Watts received a headright of 250 acres on Aquaintanoroke Swamp in New Kent Co., VA (Land grant book 6, page 503)

Heineman page 5&6

[William Watts and Richard Davis patented, July 30, 1638, seventy-five acres on Queens Creek, adjoining the lands of Robert Booth and Lieutenant Popeley; due as follows: Fifty acres for the adventure of said Watts and wife, the second year, to Charles River, and twenty-five acres for the adventure, the second year, of the said Davis to Charles River.
The "adventure" refers to the bounty in land offered those who would settle on Charle is man as the Edward watts who left England for Virginia 11/26/1640 with William Wigg and others. In 1646 he was shown in York Co., VA. Apparently he returned temporarily to England, for he returned from Bristol, England, to Virginia in 1664 and again in 1679.

He is believe to have been the Edward Watts who deeded land in (old) Rappahannock Co., VA, 2/22/1662. (deed Book 1656-1664, page 344). He probably was the same Edward Watts who received a headright in New Kent Co., VA, 10/20/1687.

William married Charity Marie Elleyze [17147] [MRIN: 5990].

Fourth Generation (Great-Grandchildren)

4. Edward Watts [2519] (Cornelius3, Robert Harrison2, William1) was born in 1620 in England and died in 1690 in Stafford Co, Va at age 70.

General Notes: Edward Watts of Stafford Co., VA, with his wife, Anne Watts, were brought into Court in 1689 and fined. (Stafford County Court Book 1689-90, at page 32).
Edward Watts died in Stafford Co., VA, in 1690, and his widow, Anne Watts, administered his estate. This record appears in the old Stafford order book, but the corresponding entry in the Will Book is lost or destroyed.

More About EDWARD WATTS:
Christened: 16 Oct 1620, St. Cuthbertes, City of Wells, Somerset Co., England

Children of EDWARD WATTS and ANNE are:
i. EDWARD3 WATTS, b. Abt. 165014; d. Abt. 172815.

Notes for EDWARD WATTS:
The following information is from Charles B. Heinemann's book "Watts Families" pa 54-56

We identify this as the Edward Watts who appeared in Safford County shortly before his appearance in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

We list the following as belonging to him:

1709 Nov 2 - Edward Watts, Stafford Co., Va., aquired 1 acre of land on the south side of Clayburn's Run, Richmond Co., Va., from Charles and Alice Cole, Watts to build mill and grind corn for Cole. (Richmond Co. D. B. 5, pa. 151)

1723 Apr 2 - Edward Watts sued the estate of John Richardson (Spotsylvania County, Order book, pa. 24.)

1723 Dec 3 - Edward Watts served on a jury in Spotsylvania County (Order book pa. 60,65)

1727 Aug 1 - Edward Watts witnessed will of Alexander Cammill, Spotsylvania County, made July 10, 1727; proved August 1, 1727.

1728 Sep 9 - Edward Watts received a grant of 900 acres of new land in St. George's Parish. The same day his son, Thomas Watts, received a grant of 250 acres adjoining his father. The grant of Thomas Watts specifically refers to "Thomas Watts, a son of Edward Watts", so we have a definite tie-up. these grants were signed by Governor William Gooch and both dated September 26, 1728. Both men were described as "of Spotsylvania County", indicating they had settled in that county at an earlier date.

Copy of Land Grant to Edward Watts for 900 acres of new land on page 55

The fact that no record is found in Spotsylvania County after September 28, 1728, showing any activity of Edward Watts leaves us a choice of these deductions:

1. That Edward Watts was later located in some County such as Orange, formed from Spotsylvania County in 1734.2. That he was merely a short time resident in Spotsylvania and removed to one of the older
counties where he died.

Charles Heinemann deducted that this Edward Watts was the father of several sons,
and perhaps several daughters. The fact that records of his son Thomas antedate those of this
father show Edward Watts was an adult of middle age or later when he received the land grant of 1728.

Tentatively he lists the following children of Edward Watts:
Thomas
Edward
David
William
John

From Sebree Studies, pa. 134:

Another possibly child of Edward Watts was Robert Watts whose will was recorded 28 May 1741 in Orange Co. (Will book 1, pa. 155) Legatees were his brothers William and Thomas and a nephew, Thomas Watts. His brothers were named executors, they and Samuel Ball were witnesses. Heineman places this Robert Watts in the list of issue of Thomas Watts and Esther, but there is no evidence to recommend this placement.

Edward married Ann [2520] [MRIN: 880].

Children from this marriage were:

+ 6 M    i. Thomas Watts I [2516] was born in 1640 in England and died in Stafford Co, Va.

7 M    ii. Edward Watts II [2526] was born in 1650 in England.

Edward married Ann Martin [7431] [MRIN: 2752]. Ann was born in 1665.

   8 M    iii. David Watts [17148] .

   9 M    iv. William Watts [17149] .

   10 M    v. John Watts [17150] .
