Ballymurphy

Two views of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church
This was the church that the Cummins in the parish of Borris would have attended. "The church is the most prominent feature as you enter the village from any direction. Built in 1840/41, it replaced a thatched structure which stood to the west side of the present one. At one time there was a bell on the gable which was erected by V. Rev. P. Carey P.P., Borris, but this has since been taken down and replaced by the present one which was presented in 1915 by a Mr. Byrne, Bell-founder, Dublin, who was a native of Ballymurphy. The approach to the church of terraced steps were erected by V. Rev. J. Dunne P.P., Borris, in 1925."
Photos taken by Betty Clingman, April 2001. We appreciate Betty's generosity in giving permission for using the photos. Information on the church from "Tombstone Inscriptions of St. Mullins," Muintir na Tire, 1986.
