Curries of Mississippi and Louisiana

 

Alexander CURRIE and Catherine/Loruhamah CROMARTIE, of Warren County, Mississippi, were the parents of William Cromartie Currie. We don't have documentation yet but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints lists this information in their online database.

William had a sister, Loruhamah, who m. Thomas Alexander. He also had a sister Jane Currie and possibly another named Elizabeth Currie.

Jane Currie married Henry H. Beard on February 3, 1836, in Warren County. William worked as overseer for his brother-in-law Henry Beard at "Outpost" plantation on the Mississippi, according to a letter from Annie Eliza Currie to a relative.

Elizabeth Currie married Isham Beard on March 7, 1832, inWarren County. In 1850 he was 39, she was 38. Children listed on 1850 census: Mary, 17; Martha, 15; William H., 12; Louisiana, 10; James, 7; Virginia, 5; Eugenia C., 5; Henry B., 3; and Clarice B., 1; all born in Louisiana.

 


William Cromarty Currie, b. 17 June 1810, m. (1st) Adelina Whitaker on 14 April, 1836
Adelina was born 2 November, 1818, and died on 28 August, 1849 of yellow fever.
*Note: If anyone out there knows where Adelina is buried, please let me know.

Children of William and Adelina:

 1 Abram Whitaker Currie, b. 18 March 1838; m. Adelia F. Selser, 5 April 1860; div. 16 February 1871; m. Helen Paulina Damm, 12 December 1878; d. 27 September 1889 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

          1 Bruce Domm Currie, b. 17 April 1880, d. 20 January 1937 in Port Arthur, Texas.
                    Bruce was hit by an automobile after stepping off a city bus. At the time of his death he worked in the Lithographing Department of Texaco.

          2 Albert Whitaker Currie, b. 21 November 1882; m. Lettie Leora Admire, 18 October 1911 in Illinois. Albert died 15 June 1966.
....................Lettie Currie died in 1948 in Port Arthur.

          3 Von Rehder Currie, b. 2 December 1884; d. 1940 near Angleton, Texas.
                    V.R. (Vic) was retired from the Texaco Personnel department and was a member of several fraternal organizations. He was presumed to have drowned after he went missing while fishing alone on Bastrop Bayou. His boat was found untied and floating in the Bayou and later the same day his body was found.

      2 Huldah Amanda Divine Currie, b. 6 June 1848; d. 3 April 1934. Huldah, "Aunt Tee" to her nieces and nephews, never married and had no children. She was by all accounts well educated, sweet and kind.

....................There were perhaps three other babies between Abe and Huldah who did not survive.


William Cromarty Currie m. (2nd) Hester Ann Selser on 3 September 1850 in Carroll Parish, Louisiana.
          Hester ("Nancy") was the widow of George Richards.
          William died, d. 2 October 1876 and is buried in Vicksburg at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Hester Ann "Nancy" Selser was b. 2 February 1820, d. 10 June 1909. She is buried next to William.

      2 Kate S. Currie, b. 12 March 1853, m. James Henry Gilfoil, Sr., 16 July 1872, d. 2 June 1939

          1 Margaret Alice Gilfoil, b. 14 May 1874, d. 24 February ...? Sister Mary Scholastica, "Sister Scho"

          2 William Riley Gilfoil, b. 24 August 1875, m. Elizabeth Scott, d. 6 March 1957. "Brother Will"

          3 James Henry Gilfoil, Jr., b. 23 September 1881, m. Edna Pilcher, d. 6 November 1945. "Jim Henry"

      3 Sybelia Antoinette Currie, b. 12 May 1854, m. John H. Riley, d. 18 December 1877.
....................Sybelia died at age 23 in New Orleans of "abscess of liver."

      4 Laurahannah Alexander Currie, b. 2 May 1856, d. August 1857

      5 Leila Ada Currie, b. 20 August 1858, m. John H. Riley, d. 26 August 1925
....................(After Sybelia Currie Riley died, her widower John married his sister-in-law Leila. Sybelia also had at least two sons who died young.)

          1 Leila Ada Riley, m. Louis Alvin Deem.

          2 Burta Ogden Riley, b. 11 September 1881, m. T. Everett Pinkston, d. 8 January 1968

      6 Annie Eliza Currie, b. 1 December 1860, d. 20 July 1951
