Who Are the Cusenbary's?

•    At least two groups of Cusenbary/Quisenberry's arrived in Kentucky early, and apparently two heads of household with the name Moses. These two families were mentioned in the Forks of Elkhorn book, where both families were incorrectly attributed to Moses Quisenberry. There is no proven relationship between the two families. We would love to solve this mystery!  

•    There is a vast variation in spelling of the name.  Our ancestors themselves spelled the name in varying ways (those who could write).  

•    Our information focuses on the line of Moses Cusenbary, who first appears in Kentucky in 1786 in the Limestone settlement.

Cusenbary or Quisenberry?

Although we are "pretty sure" that the Cusenbary's are related to the Quisenberry's, there has been no proof of this. In fact, we're not even sure where Moses came from when he came to Kentucky.

Some of the Lindsay Family history's have him originating in Frederick Co, Maryland, but as far as we are aware, no one has been able to find any trace of him in that county.

The one clue to his origin that we have is the Petition of the Laurel Hills Residents, which places both Moses and the Lindsay's in Southwest Pennsylvania/Northwest Maryland in 1783 (someplace in the disputed land between Pennsylvania and Virginia, most likely in the Fort Pitt area).

Throughout Virginia in the 1700's there were both Cusenbary's and Quisenberry's, very possibly the same people. But none of the dates of the known families match our Moses and his family. Have any information? We'd love to hear from you!

And how do you spell that?
The descendents of Moses adopted various spellings of the name:

The Cushenbery's (one R) are mostly descended from Charles Sidney (Hiram, James, Daniel [under dispute, poss John, Daniel's brother], Moses). They settled primarily in Missouri and Kansas.

The Cusenbary's are two lines of descent, each settled in different parts of Texas:
One line, descendents of Elijah Stith Cusenbary (Daniel, Moses) migrated from Kentucky to Missouri to Texas.
The other line, descendents of Daniel B (William D, Vincent, Moses), migrated from Kentucky to Texas.
The Cushenberry's (two R's) are various descendents of Vincent, the ones remaining in southern Kentucky used this spelling.

The Crisenberry's are descendents of William, son of Moses, who stayed in northern Kentucky, most descendents migrated north (IN, OH, IL).
