General Notes:
Soon after Percy's birth, they all (Thomas Barraclough, Charlotte
Cutter (nee Kendall), Thomas' son, young Charlotte and infant
Percy (children of Charlotte and James Cutter)) left New Zealand
and settled in Euroa Victoria Australia).
Thomas Barraclough was a shoe-maker and this is probably where
Percy first learned the trade as a young boy in Euroa.
After the death of his mother and just a few years later the death
of his 'stepfather' (apparently Thomas and Catherine did marry,
but no record has yet been found), when he was 15 years old, he
set off to lead an independent life.
In 1890 Percy had a bootmaker's shop in Katamatite and around this
time he met Bridget Anne O'Reilly, married in 1896. The family
travelled around for many years.
Enlisted in the army (Serial Number 6476) for the First World War
but did not see active service. After the war, in 1920, he was
granted a soldier settlement farm as part of Rhind's Estate, at
Portarlington with a grant of 256 ($512) to purchase stock and
implements.
With the children leaving home, he and Bridget settled down in
Ballarat. Where he returned to his old trade of shoe-maker and
repairer. He had a tiny shop in Humphry St Nth Ballarat in the
late 1920s until he retired in 1943.
He died in the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne on 12 Nov, 1946.

General Notes: James left England in

James and Charlotte's first child (James) was born in New Zealand
and soon after, they moved to the Goulbourn area in NSW,
Australia. Kendall and Charlotte were born there.
James acquired a 100 acre property at Brisbane Waters (near

respected stonemason in the area.
Charlotte, pregnant with Percyl Herbert Thomas and with young
Charlotte, left James and returned to New Zealand late in 1872.
In 1879 James remarried (Harriet Bailey) possibly under the old
law of abandonment and/or separation by sea for seven or more
years negated any previous marriage. But the marriage certificate
states he is a widower at the time of this marriage. He also let
it be known that he was married to a Maori woman who died after
the two boys were born (which was false).
James went to Fiji as an employee of Colonial Sugar Refining
Company, soon after the marriage, to build the Nausori Mill at
Rewa sugar processing plant. He died there 20 February, 1882 aged

Victoria Australia. The cause of her death was Charlotte died
after a miscarriage and resulting haemorrhage at Alma Cottage,

General Notes: Charlotte was born to
Maria MITTENS about 1847 in Cape Town, South Africa. She was most
probably born out of wedlock as Maria did not marry Thomas WATMAN
until 1849.
She assumed the surname KENDALL sometime after Maria and William
KENDALL got together.
Charlotte was 18 when the family arrived in New Zealand in January
1865. On 12 October of the same year, The family lived in Church
Street, Onehunga. Charlotte married James Cutter at St Peter's
Church in Onehunga (Marriage Cert # 54 NZ). Officiating Minister

Maria was born on 15 Jan 1825 in St Helena Island, was christened on 15 Jan 1826 in St Helena Island, died on 23 Feb 1877 in Auckland New Zealand at age 52, and was buried in St Peter's Church Onehunga New Zealand.

(born about 1847 in Cape Town South Africa - died on 28 Feb 1882

7. Maria MITTENS, daughter of Thomas MITTENS and Margaret
THOMAS, was born on 15 Jan 1825 in St Helena
Island, was christened on 15 Jan 1826 in St Helena Island, died on
23 Feb 1877 in Auckland New Zealand at age 52, and was buried in
St Peter's Church Onehunga New Zealand.
General Notes: Birth name give as
MITTONS.
Maria's first child (Charlotte) was born about 1847 in Cape Town,
South Africa.
The father is unknown and this was 2 years before she married
Thomas Watman (1849). It is assumed that Charlotte was born out of
wedlock.
She married Thomas William Michael Watman in Cape Town, 28 May
1849.
Her second child (Thomas Michael) was born 2 September 1850 to
Thomas Watman.
Maria apparently separated from first
husband Thomas Watman within a couple of years of marriage,
although whether
mutual or if not initiated by whom is not known. It would explain
why a marriage between Maria and William Kendall
has never been located - it likely never occurred. It is worth
noting that at the time of her father's death in 1857 (some
years after she formed the relationship with William Kendall), her
brother Joseph still recorded Maria as Maria Watman
on their father's death certificate. Either Joseph (Thomas's son)
was unaware of the new relationship, or there was no formal
marriage it would seem.
Met William Kendall about 1852 (although if married is unknown).
In the early 1850's, they moved to Paarl, about 50 km (30 miles)
from Cape Town. Where the next six children were born.
In 1864 the family moved to Onehunga, New Zealand where the last
two of ten children were born.

Margaret as "the Property of Mr PRITCHARD" indicating that she was
born to slave parents.
Margaret and Thomas had eight children born on St Helena Island,
Maria being the fifth child. Then two more children born after

The Birth/Baptism records for their first four children indicates
that she was "FREED" from slavery by 1825.
In the late 1830's or early 1840's, the Mittens family moved to
Cape Town in Cape Colony (as South Africa was then known) as the
English had freed all slaves and the English government needed
settlers there.
Margaret died in Cape Town between 1845 and 1857.

was born before 1770 in St Helena Island, died about 19 Nov 1817
in Jamestown, St Helena Island, and was buried on 20 Nov 1817 in
Jamestown, St Helena Island.
General Notes: The background of Joseph
Mittens is not known, but it is thought that he was also a slave.
The vast majority of slaves on St Helena came from MADAGASCAR
rather than the mainland of AFRICA as MADAGASCAR was on the direct
trade route from INDIA to ENGLAND via the Atlantic Ocean with St
Helena Island being a main stopover. It is not known if he was
second or third generation born on St Helena.
1814 census for St Helena shows Joseph as the owner of 3 cows and
3 calves.
This would indicate that he was a 'freed slave' at that time.
Joseph married Sophia YATES on 16 May 1812 in St James CoE church, Jamestown, St Helena Island. Sophia was born about 1768 in Jamestown, St Helena Island and died on 27 Mar 1841 in Jamestown, St Helena Island aged about 73.

mulatto woman, was born about 1768 in
Jamestown, St Helena Island and died on 27 Mar 1841 in Jamestown,
St Helena Island aged about 73.
General Notes: Sophia Yates was born
circa 1768 at Jamestown, St. Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean,
the child of an Englishman. Thomas Yates and a mulatto woman. A
mulatto was what a child of a white person and a Negro was called.
As the child of a white person and a mulatto, Sophia would have
been classed as a quadroon (i.e. on quarter black).
Although there were a significant number of free Negroes living on
St. Helena at the time, it is almost certain that Sophia's mother
was a slave. Being referred to only as a mulatto woman, rather
than by name indicates this. Sophia's mother was most likely a
slave owned by Thomas Yates. Given that Sophia's marriage to
Joseph Mittens did not take place until 1812 (twenty years after
they got together), provides some confirmation that Sophia started
out life as a slave.
That being said, the record of her marriage indicates that she was
free in 1812 when she married.
Sophia married Joseph
MITTENS on 16 May 1812 in St James CoE church,
Jamestown, St Helena Island. Joseph was born before 1770 in St
Helena Island, died about 19 Nov 1817 in Jamestown, St Helena
