General Notes: AFTER a residence of 58
years in Launceston, and living to see her sons useful and
prominent members of the community, Mrs Ann Hart passed peacefully
away on Thursday last at the ripe age of nearly 89 years.
Mrs Hart arrived in a Launceston in 1833 with her husband, the
late Mr Wm. D. Hart, and four children, after a voyage of seven
and a half months from England. A few days after arrival Mr Hart
bought an allotment of land in Brisbane -street, nearly opposite
where the Masonic Hall now standS, and erected thereon a cottage,
in which Mrs Hart has, with the exception of a few months, resided
ever since. Here other children were born, eight members of a
family of eleven still surviving, and here Mrs Hart has witnessed
the growth and expansion of the township of 1833, the eastern
boundary of which was Tamar street, into the city of 1891.
A consistent member of the congregation of the Patterson-street
Wesleyan Church since the first minister was stationed here in
1835, Mrs Hart imbued her children with principles that have made
them respected as well as successful in life. They are too well
known to require more than naming to our readers. The eldest, the
hon. Wm. Hart, M.L.C. for Launceston, an ex-Mayor, and head of the
firm of W. Hart and Son; then come Mr John Hart, M.H.A. for
Deloraine, and Warden of that municipality; Mr Anthony Hart, who,
after carrying on business in Launceston for many years, has
retired and resides at Trevallyn ; Mr Frank Hart, head of the firm
of F. Hart and Son, Laun ceston; and Mr Frederick Hart, head,of
the well-known firm of F. Hart and Co., at Campbell Town, and a
municipal coun cillor.
Mrs Hart was in full possession of her faculties almost to the
last, being only taken ill a week ago, and on Sunday week was in
her usual place at church.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon,the remains being
interred in the general cemetery.
