William S. Halteman was born on 19 June 1880 at home, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He was the son of Moses S. Halteman and Almira Schultz. William S. Halteman was also known as William Schultz Halteman. However, he had, as far as he knew, no middle name. He used the initial S from his earliest years.1 He received the sacrament of Holy Communion every time it was celebrated from October 1898 till April 1901 inclusive with the exception of October 1900, and also in January of 1902 and October of 1904 in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.4 He was baptized as an adult on 13 November 1898 at age 18 in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Howard Long conducted the services.5 He played a slide trombone, which he bought in November 1898 from George Deimer. He started to play with a band in January 1900, and joined the Spring City band. Their band festival, in which he played, was on Aug. 18, 1900: they cleared $110. He later played with the Germamia Band of Norristown, Pennsylvania for the Evansbury Festival on June 14, 1902, and he later joined that band. He first heard John Philip Sousa and his band in concert at Mullan Grove, when he played there from May 30th to June 28th 1902; Sousa then played at the Steeple Chase Pier, Atlantic City. In later years, he would take every opportunity he could to see John Philip Sousa and his band whenever they would play on the Atlantic City boardwalk. He loved their march music.
He could also sing; he had a rich bass voice. He resisted the efforts of the church organist, and of Mae Bessor, who pleaded with him, to recruit him for the church choir.
William S. Halteman was by trade, a carpenter.6,7 He was by necessity, a driver, a deliveryman, for the laundry operated by his wife's brother-in-law.8 He joined Carpenters and Joiners Union No. 997 on 18 February 1902 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
He married Melvina Raysor, daughter of William H Raysor and Rachel (?), on 28 June 1902 at the parsonage of St. Vincent Reformed Church which was very probably 270 Chestnut Street,9 Spring City, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Howard Long conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by John P. Spring of Norristown, as best man, and Anna E. Gresh, also of Norristown, as bridesmaid.10,11 They lived at several different residences during their brief marriage. They both lived in Spring City until they married, then:
517 Kohn Street, Norristown, where he began to board in June 1902, with Millie moving in on June 30th. They spent the 29th at her parent's home, and the 30th at his parent's; it rained both days, and spent the nights at his home.

Beech Street, Norristown (a house) beginning on July 18, 1907.12 A coal black stray cat, named Topsy, showed up at their home at 1213 Willow Street, Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on the night of Tuesday, 9 September 1902--- and was adopted. William S. Halteman joined a volunteer fire company, Norris Hose Co., on 6 September 1907 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, His badge number was 167, and he fought several fires. He ceased living at 21 Beech Street, Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on 3 October 1909. He took his sons to board with Josiah. He started to board at Hotel Rambo on Monday evening, Oct. 11th. He sold at private sale on October 15th everything, with a few exceptions.13
William S. Halteman went to the Million Dollar Pier, Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Monday, 29 January 1912. He started to take dancing lessons. This was when he met Mary Woods and her daughter Ida. They would not meet again for eight years. He asked Ida to dance and she found that he had two left feet; he stepped on her toes.13 He was a pallbearer at Almira Halteman's funeral in her home, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 11 November 1915.14 William S. Halteman and Ida Gregory Woods were engaged on 23 July 1921. William S. Halteman married Ida Gregory Woods, daughter of William Woods and Mary E. Bissett, on 28 September 1921 at 124 Second Street, Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey.15,16,17 The Rev. J. L. Surtees, pastor of Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church, Pleasantville, performed the ceremony. The newspaper, in reporting the marriage, declared that the groom was from a prominent Philadelphia family.
The matron of honor was the bride's sister, May Kline, and the best man was her brother, Charles Woods. The bride's niece, Ruth Woods, was the flower girl. Delma Kline played Lohengrin's Wedding March on the piano. There were 10 others present, none from the groom's family, at the 7 p.m. ceremony.
Also present was the bride's mother, Mary Woods, her sister-in-law, Isabelle Woods, nieces Alverna and Margaret, and nephew Laurence Woods. Also, her cousin Lilian Woods Buck and her husband, William Ray Buck. Mrs. John Anderson, Mrs. Mary McCue and Mrs. Charles Wiesenberger completed the guest list.
Following the wedding breakfast, the couple left on the 9:09 p.m. train for Niagara Falls, and other places. A good number of friends showed up to wish them well.16

Halteman and Ida lived between 8 February 1922 and 22 May 1922 at West Jersey Avenue, Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey. William S. Halteman and Ida lived on 22 May 1922 at 44 West Reading Avenue, Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey. William S. Halteman and Ida lived after 1923 at 43 East Revere Avenue, Northfield, Atlantic County, New Jersey. William S. Halteman was a Methodist after 1926. He joined Central Methodist Episcopal Church in Linwood, Atlantic County, New Jersey, on 21 February 1926. The Rev. Walter C. Bishop received him into membership. He enjoyed baseball; he was a Philadelphia fan, but he was realistic about their chances. He was known to say that they would trade any decent player they had playing for them. He was usually right about that. He petitioned for a delayed birth certificate on 6 August 1942 from the Orphan's Court of Chester County, Pennsylvania. He sought the birth record so he could collect Social Security; he was 62-years-old at the time. The petition was granted by Judge Coust Woods on 3 August 1942. Supporting affidavits were filed by Josiah S. Halteman, Amos Kolb and Nora Hartman.1 William S. Halteman and Ida sold their home at 43 E. Revere Ave., Northfield, Atlantic County, New Jersey, on 15 April 1949 to their daughter Mary and her husband Charles.18,19 William S. William S. Halteman wrote in his diary, in the entry immediately after he records his mother's death, the following: 'Father sold all out // on Sat. Nov 27--15 // horse brought $10.00 // house brought $2680 // sold my organ for $12. 00' //-indicates new line.18 His son William, upon first seeing a photograph of Joseph Lake Young, the owner of the Million Dollar Pier, almost mistook him for his father; he said that the resemblence was striking and that Young looked exactly like his father.19 He died at 12:05 am on 23 December 1920 in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, at age 78 years, 6 months and 17 days. The place of his death, according to his death certificate, is Franconica Township, Montgomery County. According to the funeral memorial card, and the diary of his son William, he died in Souderton. Since he died in 1920, he could not have died in both places. Souderton was incorperated in 1897, with minor changes in the border made in 1917. He was a resident of the Mennonite Home; it is known that many places in the township have postal addresses in Souderton. If the Home had a mailing address in Souderton, while within the borders of Franconia Township, this would explain the disparity.1,20,21 The cause of Moses's death was peritirutis, congestive of lungs and heart failure.1 The physican in attendance was D. M. Landis, M.D. of Perkasie, Pennsylvania who had attended him from Jan. 13, 1912. The doctor last saw him alive December 22nd.1 He was buried on 27 December 1920 in St. Vincent Reformed Cemetery, near Kimberton, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.20,21,1 His estate was probated on 12 January 1921.17
Moses S. Halteman appeared on the census enumerated on 9 August 1850 in West Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, living with Christian Halteman and Deborah B. Stauffer. He is recorded as a seven year old male born in Pennsylvania, and having attended school in the previous year.22 Moses S. Halteman appeared in the census enumerated on 1857 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He appeared on the census enumerated on 31 July 1860 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, living with Christian Halteman. He was recorded as a 17-year-old male born in Pennsylvania, attending school, and whose occupation was given as "assistant in house."23 Moses S. Halteman appeared on the census enumerated on 31 August 1870 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, as the head of the household. Enumerated with him was his wife Almira Halteman and their daughter Irene. Living with them were her mother and sister. Moses was recorded as a 28-year-old white male employed as a farmer. He was born in Pennsylvania to native born parents. He was recorded as having real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate worth $800. He was listed as an adult male citizen of the United States10.24 In 1880, his name was also wrongly recorded as Moses Huldeman. The census enumerator recorded the name incorrectly.9 Moses S. Halteman appeared on the census enumerated on 2 June 1880 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, as the head of the household. Living with him were his wife Almira and their children Josiah S., Laura and Warren S. Halteman, as well as two unrelated persons. Moses was recorded, incorrectly, with the name Moses HULDEMAN, a 38-year-old white married male employed as a farmer. He was recorded as born in Pennsylvania to parents both of whom were also born in Pennsylvania25. Moses S. Halteman appeared in the census enumerated on 8 June 1900 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, as the head of the household. He was recorded as a 57-year-old white male born in June 1842 in Pennsylvania to parents both of whom were born in Pennsylvania. He had been married 33 years. He could speak English, read and write. He owned the home he was living in free of mortgage. No occupation was recorded26.

Josiah S. Halteman was born on 20 July 1873 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He was the son of Moses S. Halteman and Almira Schultz. Josiah was listed as a member of a church in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 1 April 1882.4 He was baptized as an adult and confirmed on 28 April 1888 at age 14 in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The service was conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. A. Mentz. Several others were received into church membership at the same time.5 Josiah was listed as a member of a church in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Spring of 1895.6 He married Catherine Euirey circa 1896.7,8 Josiah S. Halteman and Catherine lived in 1897 in East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.9,10 Josiah S. Halteman was a laborer, as described on his son's birth record, in 1897.11,12 He received the sacrament of Holy Communion every time it was celebrated from the beginning of 1898 till the end of 1904 with the exceptions of July 1900 and October 1903 in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.13 Josiah was chosen as a deacon of St. Vincent Reformed Church on 15 April 1900. His term expired in 1902, and he was not re-elected. He was chosen again to serve as a deacon, nominated on April 11th and elected on Easter Monday 17 April 1905. The term expired in 1908.14,15,16 He paid H. L. Detweiler $15, the balance of what was owed on his burial lot in May 1900.17 He was appointed as a member, with George R Hallman, of an auditing committee on 31 March 1902 in St. Vincent Reformed Church, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. They audited the accounts of the secretary and treasurer, and found $2.10.18 The church consistory of St. Vincent Reformed Church elected Josiah S. Halteman as their secretary on 15 July 1903.19 He and Catherine lived before 1905 in 135 Second Avenue, Royersford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Josiah resided there until his death.20,21,22 Josiah was chosen as an elder of St. Vincent Reformed Church on 14 April 1908 He was elected on Easter Monday, April 20th for a term which expired in 1911, at which time he was re-elected for a term which was set to expire in 1914.23,24 He was a carpenter in 1910.25 He and Catherine Halteman were the guardian of Loren Roswell Halteman and William Everette Halteman between 1910 and 1921 After the death of Melvina Raysor Halteman, his brother William entrusted the care of his sons to Josiah and Katie. It was impossible for him to care of them alone, considering their ages and his need to make a living.
Josiah and Catherine were dismissed from church membership at St. Vincent Reformed Church on 1 October 1911. The reason for the dismissal is not given, but Josiah resigned from all of his church offices a few days before, resignation accepted, at a church consistery meeting.26 Josiah S. Halteman was named the executor, along with Thomas Taylor, under the Will of Moses S. Halteman on 22 May 1912.27 Josiah S. Halteman organized the first Halteman family reunion, which was held at Ursinus College Campus at Ursinus College, Collegeville, Pa. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 1913. He collected information about the family at that first reunion and compiled a family tree for the 1914 reunion. He requested that each person give him the names of the family members from great-grandparents to great-grandchildren, with addresses, and information as to deaths and marriages. They decided to hold the 1927 reunion--celebrating the 200th anniversary of the family's arrival in this country--at the site of farm of Nicholas Halteman. The 1736 records show that he had 100 acres in Salford Township. A committee consisting of Josiah, of George Shantz and Abraham Haldeman researched the question and could provide details as to the movements of their ancestor since he landed in America, but as of the 1923 reunion could not locate the original farm. That reunion was held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 1927 at Tyson's farm near Scwenchsville, Pa. That was the home and farm of Nicholas. He was a pallbearer at Almira Halteman's funeral in her home, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 11 November 1915.28
A petition for the administration of the estate of Almira Halteman was made by Josiah S. Halteman on 10 April 1916 in the office of the Register of Wills, Chester County, Pennsylvania.29 He was the administrator of his grandmother's estate and, with his brother-in-law Thomas Taylor, he was the administror of his Aunt Louisa's estate and the executor of his father's Will. After the death of his wife Katie, Josiah hired a housekeeper, known as Mrs. W. She remained with him the reminder of his life, and it was thought by many in the family that they would one day marry. They never did. She was said to be kind, warm-hearted, and a pleasure to be around. The family loved her.30 He was employed by Bush Brothers Planning Mill in Royersford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.20 He was a member of the Royersford Bourough Council for twelve years.20 He swore out an affidavit testifying to the facts of his brother William's birth and that he knew William his entire life. He did this on 15 July 1942 in Orphan's Court, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Otto H. Moyer, a notary public, took the oath.31 Josiah S. Halteman died on 13 October 1945 in Montgomery Hospital, Norristown, Pennsylvania, at age 72 years, 2 months and 23 days.32,20 He was buried on 16 October 1945 in St. Vincent Reformed Cemetery, East Vincent Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.33,20,34 His obituary appeared in The Daily Republican, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, on 15 October 1945.
