Summer 1987 saw my son and I heading off on a rail enthusiast's holiday around some of the UK. I wanted to give my son the thrill and excitement of travelling on a "sleeper" and watching the world roll by from the comfort of your bed...oh well ..to be precise - couchette! He really loved the feeling of adventure in all this and of course so did I!

We took the sleeper from Bristol Temple Meads station  and arrived at Edinburgh Waverley early the next morning - here is 47713.  He had a ring doughnut breakfast!

an Edinburgh Waverley scene....1.............2.................3.....................4........................5...(47716).

We then went down to Newcastle and took the train to Carlisle via Hexham.

We stopped a little while at Hexham. We both sat down on a bench, within a jiffy my son was fast asleep...ahhhh, and then he woke up smiling! At Hexham there are some nice semaphores and a rather interesting Signal Box mounted over the track. These two shots show the whole scene very well - they`ll need a little retouching to clean up the dusk specks........1................2........nice shots.
