Carry on to follow me through the adult years.
In the beginning my Air Force career started off as three months of
basic training at Parks AFB, CA.
After basic training I was transferred to the
3435th Technical Training Squadron, Lowry AFB, Denver, CO. as a
Gunner on a B-29 Bomber. I completed about 3 months of the course
when I came down with the flu and spent two weeks in the hospital.
The powers to be decided that I was too far behind in the course and
was reassigned as a clerk and assigned to the Flight Operations
Section under the command of 1/LT Chester G. Palmer and M/Sgt
William J. Coles Jr. Bill Coles is the reason I was promoted from
A/3C to A/2C, he was happier than I when I finally was promoted.

One of the perks was the transportation of T/Sgt
Leonard T. Brief's wife to work several times. This was excellent
duty except for the Colorado winter snow. He was a career man and
almost all of NCOs' that I was acquainted with were. This time was
during the Presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who once stated that
serving the in service should be consider an honor and should do it
pro gratis. Click on Leonard's photo

One of my most embarrassing moments happen to me
when I was tiding up the office and empting ash trays. I dumped one
ash tray in the trash can and it must have been too close to Mary
Rennie, and some of ashes came her way because she let out a loud
scream. This wouldn't have been too bad except the inner com was
open and her scream carried throughout the building. This was a
concern to some and an annoyance to others, needless to say, I was
looked on strangely for some time. Click on Mary's photo to
the right to view.
I was soon transferred as a clerk to assist 1/LT
Bernard J. Max in his new assignment of Video Presentations to the
trainees on the base, usually in the Theater Building as seen in the
front of this book. We didn't use the Theater projector but brought
one our own. I was in the Stage Hand Class my Senior year and this
proved to be quite helpful, because I set up and ran the projector,
this all occurred on Saturdays' which broke up my weekends. I
usually left the Base on Fridays evening and traveled by Bus to
Loveland, CO fifty miles away. 1/LT Max was Bombardier Instructor
and had earned his wings. Click on 1/LT Max photo to the right
to view.
All of this material was in the "The Gunner" a
1953 publication of The Flexible Gunnery School, Lowry AFB, Denver,
CO. and brought back great memories of my time spent at Lowry. I
made some great friends there and even met a great girl that we
became friends and eventually went our separate ways. Click on

1. I started this tour of duty with 8
weeks of Basic Military Training (BMT) at this Base. I left
and returned to Parks AFB 3 times during my four years.
2. Main Gate to Lowry AFB, Denver,
CO. The building in the center of the building is the 3275th
Military training Wing. I worked in this building under the
supervision of 1/LT Bernard J. Max in 1954.
3. West entrance to Lowry AFB, Denver
CO. The building to the left in the distance, down by the
flight line and hangars is where I worked in 1953, 3425th
Technical Training Group in the Operations center.
4. The Barracks at Lowry AFB, Denver,
CO. This was my first assignment when arriving at Lowry.
The3427th Student Squadron in the Turret System School. When
completed I was to fly in B-29's. Please note the door right
below the chimney. This led to the coal burning furnace
which I was lucky enough to be chosen to stroke three times
a night. There were about 8 of us recruits chosen to keep
the others comfortable. By the way there were no thermostats
installed in the barracks.
5. Headquarter Building at AMPHA APO
323, FEALOGFOR (Far Eastern Logistic Force) Tachikawa AFB,
Tachikawa, Japan. I was assigned in this building, 1st floor
back right hand side of the building as a courier, that
traveled to Tokyo with hard copies of messages. I even
carried a 45 with a full clip.
6. Front of the Headquarter Building
where I was only lucky enough to pull guard duty only twice
while there. The tour of duty was from 5:00 pm till 08:00
am. Was paid a visit by the base commander one evening and
if the pounding on the front door by his Japanese driver
hadn't woken me, my career would be ending right there.
7. The Barracks were great, about all
there was to do was to make your bed. House boys were hired
by the men in the barracks to clean the rooms and polish
your shoes. First time in history that I came to work in
shiny shoes every day.
8. The Base Theater was great. How
about 50 cents for a movie and a buck twenty a carton for
cigarettes.

One of the reasons I did not stay in the Air
Force is that of the salary I received on the 15th day of each
month, $159.40. Note the deduction for the Soldiers Home for ten
cents. I would have made Staff Sargeant if I had
re-enlisted so they said. Sometimes I wonder if I had made the right
decision. Who knows. . . . |

Paul Dale May 1952 - May 1962 US Air Force
While I was assigned to the AMPHA Hq. Sq., at Tachakawa Air Force Base, I
strapped a 45 to my hip, put the clip in my pocket and was driven to Tokyo
every day as a courier to delivery messages, etc., to the Headquarters
there.
Reminds me of Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith TV program. But the clip was
full, they gave me more than one bullet. Any spent ammo was accounted for,
at a court martial or article 15 for any bullet spent.
Next image is a notice in the local base paper about Dale and Gotthardt
winning a pinochle tournament. When not on duty a group of us guys would
assemble at the service club and play pinochle, sometimes from dawn to dusk.
I also bowled with Jim Gotthardt on a bowling team on the base. We entered a
tournament in Tokyo in a team event and gave the entry fee to a Staff
Sergeant to enter the team. The guy took off with the money and drank it
away. The team got to Tokyo and was waiting to bowl when we found out that
the team wasnt entered. Needless to say we all got so disgusted in this
Sergeants behavior that we went to the First Sergeant and got him busted
down a rank. I dont recall his name, but it wasnt a very pleasant thing
working around this guy, after he got busted.
Next image is what everyone got when their tour of duty was coming to an end
and they were leaving Japan and going home to another base, or in my case,
home to get discharge from the Air Force, as shown by the newspaper ad that
Dad put in the local newspaper, Loveland Reporter Herald.
And
lastly is the piece of paper, dated 28 May 1960, that I was looking for
after 8 years in the Air force.

In this photo John is just recovering from an accident where he worked, you can see how
much weight he lost. Rosie related to Phyllis that she used this money toward the purchase
of her wedding wardrobe.

11th & Sheridan, Port
Townsend, WA 1956.
Back yard of the "House That Dad Built," at the above stated address. Dad
always grew a garden, I can recall spading up this plot of ground when younger. Dad made
us double spade it then rake it. There were cultivators around, but Dad said if you do it
this way the food will taste better. In Moms lap is a pot of green beans that she was
snapping.
I recall taking this photo. It was in the summer of 1956 when I was discharged from the
Air Force at Parks Air Force Base, CA. I then flew to Denver, CO, and we returned as a
family to Port Townsend, WA. See next image for farther information.

that Boulder, CO is now in Boulder, Calif.

Forney Arc Welders 1957 - 1962
Fort Collins, Colorado 24 June 1961 was the beginning of Paul and Phyllis
Family History. Both Phyllis and I worked at Forney Arc Welders. I started
there in 1957.I believe Phyllis started in 1960. We met and fell in love and
was married 24 June 1961.
The picture of the house at 807 Roosevelt, pictured top right where we were
living at the time, was within walking distance of Forneys where we worked,
as shown top right.
In this house are great memories of all the kids, Christine, George, Bonzo,
and eventually Paula June as shown on this 1965 photo. One time I was late
for supper and George threw my Pork Chop out the window for our family pet,
Bonzo. Thereafter you only had to call me once for supper.
I was in charge of the Mail and Forms Management Department, which was next
door to the Advertising Department, where they coned me into doing some
soldering on a tub, advertising a function of this welder model, as shown in
the bottom left picture.
1 August 1962 Phyllis and I was blessed with Paula June, as shown in
picture on the bottom right.

1957 Summer - Loveland, CO
In the Summer of 1957 Dad and Mom and the family moved back
to Loveland, CO on Roosevelt Ave. As seen in the background is Dad and Glen
with my dog Bonzo. In the foreground as shown is John, and Rosie Leonard
Dale with their first born Julie.
1957 Christmas - Boulder,
CO
Left to right back; Marvin and Glen. Left to right center; Mom holding Julie,
Dad, Paul. Left to right front; Mary, Richard
We lived on the University Hill in a cute little house. Dad and I cooked Christmas
dinner together and it was really good, so good the next day Johnny and
I had left over's and Johnny couldn't get up from the chair for 1 1/2 hours later cause he
stuffed himself so much. I was very pregnant with Jess at the time. We really had a
great day that day. Grandpa Dale got little Julie a tricycle for Christmas. She had a lot
of growing to do before her very short legs could reach the pedals. Wow they look so
young. Did we really ever look like that??????????????? Do you remember the duck that we
had there? The neighbor got so mad at me because of the duck being in her yard that she
came after me with a broom. She sure was surprised when JD came out from under the car he
was working on! It was pretty funny. RD

Spring 1959 Loveland, CO.
Seated Left to Right; Alice Fletcher Leonard, Jess A. Leonard, Elmer E.
Dale, Lloyd R. Dale. Standing; Rosie Marie Leonard Dale.
I believe that the photo was taken in the Spring of 1959, just prior to Dads death 1
April 1959. Lloyd had just got out of the Army. The address was at
819 E. 4th Street, Loveland, CO. I believe the Leonard's and your parents had paid a visit
and brought some Strawberries. This was what everyone was eating, Strawberry Shortcake.
