The company was prepared to engage the British should they choose to retreat from Lexington and Concord via the only land route back to Boston. Under constant attack by the Massachusetts Militia throughout their retreat, the British officers led their soldiers back to Boston via the shortest route possible. This required the British to utilize the same boats used when the march began the night before. As it became increasingly clear that the British were not prepared to continue attacks on the Massachusetts country side Captain Daniels began to release soldiers under his command for their return trip back to Mendon. The last of the company's 61 men returned to Mendon on April 29, 1775.
