1775 June 10   Robert T. Thomas born to Tristram and Ann Pledger Thomas;

1778 September 22   Jane House born to William and Susannah House;

1795 March 8   Robert T. Thomas and Jane House marry;

1806 September 8    Daniel L. Thomas born in Marlboro County, SC, to Robert T. and Jane House Thomas;

1811 February 20    Patience Hammond born to William and Mary Carter Hammond;

1817 September 3   Tristram Thomas, Robert T. Thomas' father, dies without a will;  

1819   Robert T. Thomas dies without a will;

1819 December 28(?)   Philip Thomas, son of Tristram and brother of Robert T., sues all heirs of Tristram in a dispute over land included in Tristram's estate.  Cheraw Equity Bill 1826 No. 35;

1828 February 4   Daniel L. Thomas sells Marlboro County land he inherited from his father’s estate;

Late 1820s   Daniel and Patience marry, probably in Alabama;

1830 July 26   Mary Jane, Daniel and Patience’s first child, born in Alabama;

1830    Daniel L. Thomas is listed on page 96 of the census for Conecuh County, Alabama, (presumably, Patience is the listed female between 15-20 years of age and Mary Jane is the listed female under 5 years of age);

1833   John F., Daniel and Patience’s second child, born in Butler County, Alabama;

1835   William Hammond is included on a Butler County, Alabama, real estate tax list;

1837   Matthew, Daniel and Patience’s third child, born in Butler County, Alabama;

1835-1840   Patience’s father, William Hammond, dies in Alabama;

1840   Mary Carter Hammond is listed as a widow in the 1840 Butler County, Alabama, census;

1840 census   "Danl Thomas" is listed on page 139 of the census for Butler County, Alabama; if that listing is Daniel, then Patience, Mary Jane, John F., and Matthew are accounted for in the census listing;  Ambrose Smith is listed on page 138 (Mary Jane Thomas later married Ambrose's son, Ambrose);

1841 December 1    Martha Ann, Daniel and Patience’s fourth child, born in Alabama;

1844 August 11    James Monroe, Daniel and Patience’s fifth child, born in Alabama;

1845-46 (ca.)    Mary Jane marries Ambrose Alison Smith in Alabama;

1847 March 11   Patience and Daniel's first grandchild, Daniel A. Smith, is born in Alabama;

1849 October 28   Joseph Lafayette, Daniel and Patience’s sixth child, born in Alabama;

1850   Daniel, Patience, John, James, Martha Ann, Matthew, and Joseph listed on page 251 of the census for Butler County, Alabama; Mary Jane had already married Ambrose A. Smith and is listed on page 235;

Early 1853   Matthew C. Thomas joined Coldwater Lodge 148 (Masonic) at Woodstock, Alabama; 

1854 January 9   John F. Thomas marries Harriet L. Josey in Alabama;

1855 October 5   Daniel and Patience move onto Butler County land described in federal land certificate No. 50044;

1855 December 26   Daniel purchased land in Butler County from United States Government (land certificate No. 49106);

1856   The Butler County 1856 tax records list Daniel L. Thomas in Precinct 3 as owning S1/2 NE1/4 Sec. 22, Township 8, Range 15; SW1/4 SW1/4 Sec. 23, Township 8, Range 15, and NE1/4 NE1/4 Section 27, Township 8, Range 15.  This totaled 160 acres.

1856 January 8    Daniel signs a promissory note in Butler County, Alabama, payable to John F. Thomas in the amount of $80.76;

1856 March 25   Daniel executes mortgage in favor of John F. Thomas to secure the January 8, 1956, note;

1856 August 25   John F. Thomas and Ambrose Smith (Mary Jane’s husband) sign affidavit in support of Daniel’s application for grant of land he and Patience moved onto on October 5, 1855; affidavit states that Patience and Daniel have six children and four of those currently live with Patience and Daniel on the subject land (John F. and Mary Jane no longer lived with their parents);

1856 November 18   Butler County Deed records at Vol. H, p. 179, show a sale by D. L. Thomas and wife Patience to Wesley Morris of Chambers County dated November 18, 1856. Witnessed by Lovick P. Allen and John M. Morris.  It was acknowledged on June 18, 1858, and filed for record on May 9, 1860.  The land was the S1/2 NE1/4 of Section 22, also the W1/2 of the SW1/4 NW1/4 Section 23, 60 acres off of the SE1/2 SE1/4 of Section 22, all in Township 8, Range 15 containing 160 acres more or less.

1856 November 25   John F. Thomas signs acknowledgment that note dated January 8, 1856, was paid in full on November 25, 1856;

1857 July 13   John F. Thomas marries Joanna Wilson in Butler County, Alabama; (Harriett, his first wife, died sometime after May 1856);

Mid-1857   John F. Thomas became member of Dawson Lodge 244 (Masonic) at Oakey Streak, Alabama;

1857 December   Martha Ann marries John J. Jinks;

1858 March 27  John F. Thomas took his demit from Dawson Lodge 244;  this is probably when John F. and family moved to Liberty County, Texas;

1858 September   Martha Ann and John Jinks' first child, Joseph Edwards, is born in Butler County, Alabama;

1858 November 1   Land granted to Daniel L. Thomas in Alabama as described in land certificate No. 49106 (recorded Vol. 97 p. 240);

1859   The Butler County 1859 tax records list D. L. Thomas in Precinct 3 as owning E1/2 SW1/4 NW1/4 Section 23, Township 8, Range 15; NE1/4 NE1/4 Section 17, Township 8, Range 15; and 20 acres east end SE1/4 SE1/4 Section 22.  This totaled 160 acres.

1859 May (first Monday)  Daniel is the "returning officer" for Pct. 3 Oakey Streak in the election of a Justice of the Peace and a Constable;

                        1860 March 13   Butler County Deed records at Vol. H, p. 177 list a sale by D. L. Thomas and wife Patience to E. S. Tyner of  

                        Butler County dated March 13, 1860.  Witnessed by J. C. McLean and Wesley Morris.  It was acknowledged on May 2, 1860, and

                        filed for record on May 9, 1860.  The land was the E1/2 SW1/4 NW1/4 Section 23 and NE1/4 NE1/4 Section 27 and 20 acres off

                        the east end of the SE1/4 SE1/4 Section 22, Township 8, Range 15 containing 160 acres more or less.

1860 June   Martha Ann and John J. Jinks' child, C. Jinks, is born in Butler County, Alabama;

1860 census:

o Daniel, Patience, James Monroe, and Joseph Lafayette are listed on page 251, household and family number 1028 in the census for Butler County, Alabama;

o Martha Ann and her husband, J. J. Jinks, are listed on page 251, as household and family number 1029 (next door to Daniel and Patience) in the census for Butler County, Alabama;

o John F. Thomas and his second wife, Joanna, along with John’s, Harriet’s (his first wife), and Joanna’s (his second wife) children are listed on page 304, dwelling 187, family 185 of the census for Liberty County, Texas;

o Mary Jane and her husband, Ambrose Smith, and their children are listed on page 307 of the census for Liberty County, Texas;

o Matthew (or Mathew) is not accounted for;

1861 September   James Monroe Thomas, age 18, enlisted in Co. B, 17th Alabama Infantry at Montgomery, Alabama;

1862 April 10  John F. Thomas, approximately age 28, enrolled on April 10, mustered into service on April 21, and enlisted on April 26 by Capt. Spaight in Co. F, Ashley W. Spaight's Battalion Texas Volunteers (aka: Likens' Battalion Texas Volunteers, 6th Battalion Texas Infantry, and 11th Battalion Texas Cavalry) in Liberty County, Texas;

1862 November and December   Private John F. Thomas listed as "Present" on his Company's Muster Roll; 

1863 July 15   Matthew Thomas joined Co. A, 59 Regiment Alabama Infantry in Butler County, Alabama; enlisted by Capt. W. E. Pinckard

Late 1863(?)    John F., son of Daniel and Patience, dies in the Civil War at Niblett’s Bluff in Louisiana while serving in Speight’s Battalion (CSA) from Liberty County, Texas;

1864 May 8    Private Matthew Thomas with Co. A, 61 Regiment Alabama Infantry captured at Spotsylvania, Virginia;  (59th and 61st Regiments had merged);

Early to mid 1860s family story holds that Patience and son Joseph Lafayette moved from Alabama to Liberty County, Texas, and that they were very sad during the journey; another family story holds that Daniel’s and Patience’s home in Alabama burned;

1860s   Martha Ann’s husband, John Jinks, dies and Martha marries William Warren Foreman;

1865 January 1   Confederate Indigent Families List for Liberty County lists soldier J. F. Thomas [presumably, John F. Thomas] with 6 dependents;

1865 February 17   James Monroe Thomas captured at Columbia, South Carolina;

1865 April 10   Prisoner James Monroe Thomas arrived at Hart's Island Prison, New York, from Newborn(-bern?), North Carolina;

1865 June 15   Prisoner James Monroe Thomas takes the Oath of Allegiance and is released per G. O. 109 dated June 6, 1865; his place of residence is listed as Butler County, Alabama; his physical description is dark complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, and 5 ft. 9 in. tall;  pension application states that he was wounded while in service; family story holds that he walked from Hart's Island to Texas;

1865    Matthew C. Thomas demitted from Coldwater Lodge 148 (Masonic) at Woodstock, Alabama; this is the last record we have of Mathew; we do not know if the demit was because Matthew moved from the area or because he never returned to the area because he died during the war;  there is no record of Matthew taking the Oath of Allegiance and/or being released from a Union prison;

1865    Masonic Lodge records in Alabama state that a Daniel L. Thomas died;

1865 October 20   Joanna Wilson Thomas (John F.’s widow) and Jane(?) Wilson sell land fronting on Trinity River in Liberty County to Asa B. Lawrence;

1866 February 15     Patience Thomas purchases 180 acres in Liberty County, Texas, from Calvin Donaho and wife, Elizabeth Donaho; [note:  apparently Daniel is dead because he is not a party to this transaction];

1866    Mary Carter Hammond dies at Barnum, Texas;

1868 October 18   Joanna Wilson Thomas, John F.'s widow, marries John H. Simmons in Washington County, Texas;

1869 October 6   Mary Jane dies at Cleveland, Liberty County, Texas, and is buried at Oak Shade Cemetery;

1870 (ca.)   Ambrose Smith, widower of Mary Jane, marries Harriett (unknown maiden name) Peavey;

1870 February 27   Joseph Lafayette marries  Adaline Susan Hudson in Polk County, Tx;  Adaline's first husband, W. J. Ward, died September 13, 1862;

1870 census:

o Patience is listed on page 127 of the census for Precinct 3, Tarkington Prairie, Liberty County, Texas, living in the household of her son, Joseph Lafayette, and his wife; Charles, son of John F. and Harriet Josey (deceased), is also listed in Joseph Lafayette’s household;

o James Monroe---cannot locate on the census;

o Martha Ann, William Foreman and children (Jinks and Foreman children) are listed on page 87 of the census for Beat 4, Bell County, Texas; living with them was Thomas Archer, 4 year-old, white male [note:  there are at least two Archer families living close by];

o Matthew (or Mathew) is not accounted for;  [may have died as a prisoner of war]

o Ambrose Smith (Mary Jane’s husband) and some of their children are listed on page 130 of the census for Liberty County, Texas; Ambrose’s wife’s name is listed as Harriet; also living with them was Rebecca Peavy, 14 year-old, white female and Edward Peavy, 12 year-old, white male [note:  Rebecca and Robert are probably Harriett's children from a previous marriage]; 

  •  Daniel A. and Nancy Smith and their child are listed on page 128, dwelling and family 28 of the census for Liberty County, Texas;

  •  Florence Smith and Albert Richards are listed on page 128, dwelling and family 30 of the census for Liberty County, Texas;

o The children of John F. and Joanna Wilson Thomas are unaccounted for as are Joanna and her second husband, John Simmons.

1872 February 12    Patience sells to Charley and Jane Smith 180 acres in Liberty County, which she purchased in 1866; the deed states that this was Patience’s homestead;  [note:  this is probably when Patience moved to Leggett, TX, with Joseph Lafayette and his wife];

Between 1872-1878   Joanna Wilson Thomas Simmons (John F.'s widow) dies after she and John Simmons have two daughters, Nancy L. and Hellen Josephine Simmons;

1875 April 20   Patent issued to Daniel L. Thomas for land described in land certificate No. 50044; (recorded in Butler County deed records, Vol. 104, page 63);  [note:  need to research Butler County land records to determine how the land title issue was resolved for subsequent owners since the patent was issued in the name of a dead man; land probably sold at a tax sale; title records may recite date of death of Daniel];

1880 census:  

o Joseph Lafayette and his family are listed on page 45A, dwelling 198, family 204, Polk County, Tx;

o Patience is living in the Joseph Lafayette Thomas household as is J. E. Jinks, nephew, age 21;  [note:  J. E. Jinks is the son of John J. (deceased) and Martha Thomas Jinks];

o Mathew is not accounted for;

o  James Monroe and Ida Courville Thomas and their children are listed on page 45A, dwelling 199, family 205, Polk County, Tx;

 o William and Martha Ann Thomas Jinks Forman [sic] and their children are listed on page 342, dwelling 237, family 244 of the census for Precinct 5, Callahan County, Texas; [note:  family 243 also lives in dwelling 237];

 o John F. and Harriett Leona Josey Thomas' descendants (Daniel and Patience's grandchildren):

  •   Charles L. Thomas (his mother is Harriett Leona Josey) is listed on page 314D, dwelling 107, family 126 of the census for Precinct 1, Titus County, Texas;  [note:  the only other person living at this dwelling is William Edwards, age 18];

 o  John F. and Joanna Wilson Thomas' descendants (Daniel and Patience's grandchildren):

  •  James Henry Thomas is listed on page 410, dwelling 184, family 184 of the census for Precinct 1, Franklin County, Texas, as a boarder in the household of R. Ann Price [note:  his cousin, George Smith, is also a boarder in the same dwelling];

  •  Mary Agnes Thomas and B. D. Hayes and their children are listed on page 51B, dwelling 313, family 322 of the census for Polk County, Texas;

  •  Jane Elizabeth/Elizabeth Jane/Jennie Thomas and W. Pierce Mills and their child are listed on page 51A, dwelling 302, family 311 of the census for Polk County, Texas;

  •  Johnie ("Aunt Jack") Thomas and J. C. Oates are listed on page 52C, dwelling 324, family 333 of the census for Polk County, Texas;

o Ambrose Smith and his second wife, Harriett, and family (Mary Jane's children) are listed on page 243C, dwelling 125, family 134 of the census for Liberty County, Texas;   Ambrose and Mary Jane's descendants (Daniel and Patience's grandchildren) are listed as follows:        

  •  Daniel A. and Nancy Smith and family are listed on page 249, dwelling 202, family 215 of the   census for Liberty County, Texas; they are living in the household of R. C. Williamson, age 65;  Eliza Brantley, age 23, and Charles Lamb, age 26, are also listed in the household;

  •  Thomas and Martha Smith and family are listed on page 242B, dwelling 124, family 133 of the census for Liberty County, Texas; [note:  they lived next door to Thomas' father, Ambrose, and Ambrose's second wife, Harriett];

  •  Florence Smith and Verner Richards and family are listed on page 67C, dwelling 92, family 99 of the census for Wilson County, Texas;

  •  George Smith is listed on page 410, dwelling 184, family 184 of the census for Precinct 1, Franklin County, Texas, as a boarder in the household of R. Ann Price [note:  his cousin, James Henry Thomas, is also a boarder in the same dwelling];

1887 April 23   Ambrose A. Smith (Mary Jane’s husband) dies from cancer at Tarkington Prairie, Liberty County, Texas, and is buried at Oak Shade Cemetery in Liberty County; obituary states that he was born in Georgia in 1824, moved to Greenville, AL, when a child, married in Butler County, and moved to Texas in 1857; F. C. Smith, a brother who survived him, still lived in Greenville at the time; another obituary states that his father, Ambrose Smith, was born in Jefferson County, Georgia, on April 17, 1797, moved to Alabama in 1824, and died near Greenville, on March 25, 1885;

1890 October 20   Patience dies at Leggett, Polk County, Texas;

1909 November 9    Martha Ann dies in Runnels County, Texas;

1909 December 20   James Monroe files "Soldier's Application for Pension" with the State of Texas; post office is listed as Camden; 

1910 February 28    James Monroe's CSA pension is approved by State of Texas;

1920 February 1    James Monroe dies at Leggett, Polk County, Texas;

1937 April 28    Joseph Lafayette dies at Leggett, Polk County, Texas.
