Deacon John Cooper

"(IV) Deacon John, son of Deacon Samuel Cooper, was born in Cambridge, March 4, 1725, and died at Croyden, New Hampshire, August 10, 1805. He married, March 15, 1748, Mary Sherman, cousin of Hon. Roger Sherman, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut. He removed from Cambridge to Grafton with his father about 1730 and afterward removed to Hardwick, Worcester county, Massachusetts, where he bought one hundred acres of land. He was selectman of hardwick for ten years, town clerk five years, deacon twenty years, and school teacher from 1751 to 1766. About 1769 he removed to Cornish and in 1770 to Croyden, New Hampshire. Children, recorded at Hardwick: Sarah, born February 18, 1749-50; Nathaniel, November 8, 1751; Mary, July 26, 1753; John, June 15, 1755; Joel, April 3, 1757; Huldah, May 1, 1759; Sherman, April 3, 1761; Matilda, April 16, 1762; Barnabas, mentioned below; Chloe, Decmber 20, 1766.
