He placed his private yacht, Nourmahal,
at the disposal of the U.S. Government
and equipped a battery of artillery in the Spanish-American
War, in which he served as lt.-col.
He was an author and inventor of several mechanical devices,
including a bicycle brake and an improved turbine engine.
He perished in the Titanic disaster
on returning from his European honeymoon with his second wife.
