Blackwell Island is located in New York's East River, between Manhattan Island and Long Island. It takes its name from the Blackwell family, who owned it for many years. In 1973 it was renamed Roosevelt Island.

In 1823, James and Elizabeth (Hallett) Blackwell sell the Island to James L. Bell for $30,000. He dies on the Island January 12, 1825, and the Island reverts to James Blackwell.

On July 18, 1828, City of New York buys Blackwell's Island for $32,500 as a location for charitable and corrective institutions.  -30-
