Receiving an appointment by the ABCFM, he was posted to
Syria in 1855.
He subsequently organized a new educational institution,
the Syrian Protestant College (now American University of Beirut).
Bliss was its first president and remained in that post for
36 years until his retirement in 1902.
He also acted as professor and treasurer for the new college.
He was succeeded as president by his son, Dr. Howard Bliss.
