Brainard, Brainerd, Brainrd, Braner, Branerd, Braynard The name Brainerd or Brainard is of very ancient origin,
and is a place name originally spelled Brendewood or Brendewode.
Tradition says that the family came originally from the village of Braine in Flanders or France.
The name is still common in both France and Germany spelled Brainerd and Brainard.
The family is, however, without doubt of English descent, being found in England as early as 1350.
In Essex county, England , the name is spelled Brainwood , from Brentwood , meaning burnt wood.
