As a midshipman with Anson, he was shipwrecked on the Chilean coast (1741).
His account of the experience was used by Lord Byron in Don Juan.
He commanded an exploratory expedition round the world (1764-1766).
He was governor of Newfoundland (1769-1772) and was rear-admiral (1775);
he unsuccessfully attacked a French fleet under the Comte d'Estaing at the Battle of Grenada in July 1779.
