Charleton, Charlton, Cherleton, Cherrell

Royal descent from Constantine, Emperor of Rome, Kings of Britain, and Kings and Princes of Wales. The barony of Cherleton of Powis was created by writ of summons to John de Cherleton, who acquired the feudal barony of Pole (Welsh: Pool), County Montgomery, comprised in the ancient principality of Powis in right of his wife Hawys, heiress of the Wenwynwyn branch of the Sovereigns of Powys, derived from Mervyn, King of Powys, 3rd son of Rhodri Mawr, ? who by inheritance and marriage reuniting the states of North Wales, South Wales and Powys became King of all Wales A.D. 843. He was 5th in lineal succession to his memorable progenitor, Saint Cadawalader (Bendegelig, the Blessed), "as well saint as monarch," crown King of the Britains A.D. 676, whose standard displayed the "red dragon" transmitted as the distinctive cognizance of his royal race.

These Princes of Powys were induced to form Norman Alliances for some four generations, before their extinction. Partly, no doubt, as a result of this or at any event in connection with it, these princes were generally allies of the English Kings. This principality of Powys comprised the country above the Wye comprehending Montgomeryshire, parts of Shropshire, Merionetteshire, and parts of Brednock, Denbigh and Radnor. The whole of Wales in the 8th [9th?] century acknowledged one sovereign in person of Rodhi or Roderic, the Great, but on his death it was divided into three different principalities and Powys fell to Mervyn, the 3rd son.

Owen, last but one, surrendered in 1283 to King Edward I, ¤ in a Parliament held at Shrewsbury, the name and crownlet of a prince and received back his lands to hold them sub nomine et tenura liberi baronagil Angliae. Thus the barony or lordship of Powys had its origin not from conquest, as the other lordships of the neighborhood, but by submission of the Princes of Powys to the English crown and consenting to hold their lands in fealty and per baronium. After Edward I the rights devolved on him and his successor as Prince of Wales, he having made his own son, later Edward II, ¤ Prince of Wales when he was a baby, and since that time the eldest son of the reigning King is always Prince of Wales.

Candidates Work List

This is my working list of candidates to include -- I'm not yet sure if they are related to me! As candidates are eliminated (proven not related) they are marked appropriately (THUS) and an explanation included. They are kept in the list in case future research proves they can be included. (And to keep them from popping up on the list again!) Never discard good research!

Proven candidates' names are marked with an asterisk (*) until they can be added to the database.
