Churchel, Churchell, Churchil, Churchill, ChurchwellSo? Where is Sir Winston Churchill, England's great wartime PM? Look in the Spencer Family. Here's why:
At the end of the 17° century, Charles Spencer, 3° Earl Sunderland, [1675-1722], married Lady Anne Churchill. She was the daughter of John, 1° Duke Marlborough.
One of their great grandchildren, George, 5° Duke Marlborough, [1766-1840], got the idea of honoring his great grandmother Churchill by incorporating her name into his own, calling himself George Spencer-Churchill.
Three more generations and one of his great grand children (Sir Winston's father) dropped the hyphen, becoming the Right Honorable Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill, JP, MP, [1849-95]. Presto! Spencer was relegated to middle name status!
Those Churchills are really Spencers, and are listed in that family.
