His accession to the Leónese throne permanently united Castile and León. He held suzerainty over the kingdom of Granada; occupied Murcia; began codification of Spanish law (later completed by his son Alfonso X); refounded the University of Salamanca (1242).
Eleanor, daughter by his second wife, became wife of Edward I of England. ¤
