She was the
- granddaughter of economist Henry George,
- daughter of playwright director W. C. de Mille,
- and niece of cinema producer Cecil B. De Mille.
Founder of the Agnes de Mille Heritage Dance Theater, she received the Handel Medallion, New York's highest award for achievement in the arts.
She was the author of thirteen books, including:
The Book of the Dance (1963),
Lizzie Borden: A Dance of Death (1968),
the autobiographical Speak to Me, Dance with Me (1973),
America Dances (1981),
and Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham (1991).
