American oil industry pioneer.
President (from 1858) of the Seneca Oil Company,
he was the first to obtain oil from beneath the surface of the earth by drilling
(1859, Titusville, PA).

1857ca | Drake arrives in Titusville (as "Col." E.L. Drake) to inspect oil seepages |
1858/03/23 | Seneca Oil Company of Connecticut is incorporated, with Drake as largest stockholder |
1858/04 | Now remarried, Drake takes his family to Titusville |
1859/08/27 | Drake's first successful well strikes oil |
1859/10/07 | Drake's original derrick and well house burns to the ground |
