John Drew was both a popular actor in New York, and a figure in the social life. He was an adept in sports, a delightful companion, a sartorial model, and a punctilious gentleman.
He was one of the group of men headed by Edwin Booth who founded the Players Club in New York.
He sought for matter-of-fact naturalness in stage deportment, even a sort of casual nonchalance, but combined with it, cleverly disguised, the most careful enunciation and the most artful "pointing" of any speech or situation.
He may justly be said to have bridged the gap between the older acting and the new.
