Two hundred fifty years of DUDLEY political schemes and public service: 1450-1700.

In 14th century England, during the reign of Edward II, a knight acceded to a barony of properties known as Dudd's lea [lea=meadow], and became known as Sir John de Sutton, Lord Dudley -- my 20th great-grandfather (20GGF). About 1361 some of his descendants started using "Dudley" as their surname and are known as the Clopton Dudleys, or the "first house". Later, about 1420, the rest of the Suttons also adopted the Dudley name,  and their descendants are known as the Sutton Dudleys, or the "second house" (because they took the name after the first bunch) and the "Lords of Dudley", or "Barons of Dudley". It's all quite complicated, really. My descent is from the second house.

Sir John de Sutton, KG, 5th Lord Baron de Dudley [1406-1487], my 16th great-grandfather, whose children adopted the Dudley name forming the second house,  was the first Dudley of note. His wife, Elizabeth Berkeley, was a descendant of the Plantagenet kings of England. Two of their sons founded important DUDLEY lines.  -30-

As candidates are eliminated (proven not related) they are marked appropriately (THUS) and an explanation included. They are kept in the list in case future research proves they can be included. (And to keep them from popping up on the list again!) Never discard good research!

Proven candidates' names are marked with an asterisk (*) until they can be added to the database.
