A carpenter by trade, he became a Quaker preacher ~1775 and was identified with liberal
thought and especially with opposition to slavery.
Opposed to Evangelism and adoption of any set creed he is held responsible by many
for the great schism of 128 years in Quaker communities [1827-1955].
His followers were known as the Hicksite Quakers (derisively, Hickory Quakers).
