HOOKER, Richard [~1553-1600] -- English divine and theologian
Contents: |
His great work is Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, in eight books, the first four of which were published ~1592, and the fifth in 1597, and the remaining three, posthumously. This work is a defense of the Anglican church against the attacks of a narrower Presbyterianism and is important as a document in the religious struggle of the period, but its greater importance lies in its being the first really independent, full-fledged English prose work, adorned with all the richness of Elizabethan prose but not stooping to euphemism or the other fads of the day. He was
Sir Edwin Sandys' tutor and intimate friend.
