General
A descendant of John Howland, thirteenth signer of the Mayflower Compact in 1620,
his was a wide and refined culture indicated by his love of art, ancient and modern, his musical taste, and his knowledge of the organ.
His last days at his Dutchess County (NY) estate, Tioronda, were in July, 1885. While on one of his trips to Europe, General Howland became severely ill and died on March 31, 1886, in Mentone, France, where he was buried.
Tioronda, became Craig House, a psychiatric hospital for many years until it closed its doors in 1999.

1861/05 | He enlists as Adjutant of the 16th Regiment, New York State Volunteers |
1862/06/27 | Wounded at battle of Gaines Mills |
1865 | Elected New York State treasurer |
1867 | Appointed first manager of Hudson River State Hospital (Poughkeepsie, New York), in the organizing and building of which he had participated |
