KELLOGG, Samuel Henry, Rev. [1836-1899] -- American missionary in India
Contents: |
Ordained æ 28y, he was posted to India as evangelist missionary in 1865. The voyage to India was eventful: Several days out of Boston, the captain was washed overboard, and Kellogg was drafted as navigator by the inept first mate, serving throughout the voyage to Ceylon and thence to Calcutta.
Ill health forced his return to America in 1871 for two years. Returning to India, he took up work in Allahabad at the newly established Theological School of the India Synod of his church. In 1875 he published his monumental Grammar of the Hindi Language (2nd ed., 1893).
In 1876 the death of his wife caused him to resign his commission, and he returned to America, taking up the pastorate of Pittsburgh, PA, and a professorship at Allegheny Theological Seminary. He was later pastor of a church in Toronto, CAN.
After his second marriage he was recalled to India (1892) to help in revising the Hindi Old Testament. He often visited the scenes of his earlier missionary labors, delivering sermons and lectures both in Hindi and in English.
He was killed (1899) by a fall from a precipice while cycling in the Himalaya Mountains.
