Varangian* war leader, grand prince of Kiev, Russia (~978-1015).
He extended the Russian dominions and in later life
promoted peace.
He also advanced the Christianization of Russia,
being himself baptized (~988).

981 | Subdued the Chervensk cities in now Galacia |
983 | Overcame the wild Yatviags (Latvians) of the shores of the Baltic |
985 | Fought the Bulgarians on the lower Volga |
987 | Planned a campaign against the Greco-Roman Empire |
988 | In a deal with Emperor Basil II, Vladimir converts to Christianity, receiving in return Basil's sister Anna in marriage |
989 | Vladimir erects the large Church of St. Mary ever Virgin (usually called Desiatinny Sobor, the Cathedral of the Tithes) in Kieff (Kiev) |
996 | Erects the Church of the Transfiguration in Kieff. |
