MORTIMER Family

Name forms

An Anglo-Norman family of the Welsh marches holding earldoms of March and Ulster. The family is named for their castle in Normandy, Mortemer-en-Brai. They were active in English affairs from the time of William I through the middle of the 15^th century. Their power peak was undoubtedly embodied in Roger de Mortimer [1287-1330], 8^th Baron of Wigmore and 1^st Earl of March, who compelled the abdication of Edward II and likely also his subsequent murder, and managed to seize the lands and estates of many of his enemies, becoming the most powerful man in England.

His great-grandson, Edmund de Mortimer [1351-1381], 3^rd earl, on his death handed on to the house of York their claim to the throne (through his wife, Philippa, daughter of Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, 3^rd son of Edward III), setting the stage for the Wars of the Roses.

	de MORTIMER, Roger [1231?-1282] – English, 6th Baron of Wigmore MRTM41 21GGFa He added to the family estates by marriage (1247) to Maude de Breuse, a/k/a Matilda de Braose. He sided with the barons against ¤Henry III (1258), but then switched sides (1261) and, as a royalist, fought against Llewelyn ap Gruffydd. After the battle of Lewes he was exiled to Ireland but prepared a resistance and aided ¤Prince Edward to escape from de Montfort (1256). He commanded the rear guard at Evesham (1265), and was made Guardian of the Realm (1272).
