Brigadier General (1775)

He was born Dec. 2, 1736, in Ireland. He entered the British army, and was shortly afterward ordered to America. He returned to Europe, but came back to America in 1773, and purchased a farm at King's Bridge, N. Y. In 1775 he was elected to represent Dutchess county in the first New York provincial convention. The same year he was appointed a brigadier-general and was [later] killed at the battle of Quebec, Dec. 31, 1775. A marble monument was erected to his memory in New York city. HE

He was killed at the assault on Quebec. The British, recognizing his body, buried him with full honors. The U.S. arranged the return of his remains after the war (1818) in exchange for those of Major André.

After his death, the house [Montgomery Place, Annandale-on-Hudson, Dutchess, NY] was occupied by Mrs. Montgomery [Janet Livingston], who was accustomed to walk around the farm with the seeds of the locust, then a new tree in this country, in her pocket, and strew them along the fences. From these seeds have come the numerous fine locusts now on the place.
["History of Dutchess County", James H. Smith, Syracuse, NY 1882]
I believe these to be the same locust trees introduced by my ancestor, John Sands [1649-1712].  -30-
