TWAIN, Mark

Immensely popular writer and lecturer, he is revered as one of the world's great literary geniuses.

A careful and conscious artist, as a humorist he was a master of the techniques of exaggeration, irreverence and deadpan solemnity. He was unsurpassed as a creator of characters, preeminently in the immortal Huck Finn, and as a keen observer of the social scene. Sensitive to the sound of language, he introduced colloquial speech into American fiction.
