He spent all but six months of his reign abroad.
Duke of Aquitaine (1168);
Duke of Poitiers (1172);
Joined the 3rd crusade (1189) and conquered Messina and Cyprus on the way to the Holy Land.
He proved a brilliant military commander.
His victory at Arsuf gained Joppa (1191).
On return home, was captured in Austria and held for an enormous ransom,
Returned briefly to England, and died in France.
