England (1413-1422), KingIreland (1413-1422), Lord of
Second of the Lancastrian kings of England, he was the son of ¤Henry IV; created earl of Chester, duke of Cornwall, prince of Wales (1399); directed war on Welch rebels (1402-08); planned French war and commanded English army which invaded France and won a remarkable victory at the battle of Agincourt (25 Oct 1415); influential in the election of Pope Martin V (1417); married (1420) Catherine of Valois, daughter of Charles VI of France; recognized by the French in the treaty of Troyes (1420) as regent and heir to the French throne; died young while planning to secure his position against further French opposition. Succeeded by his son, Henry VI, who was expelled from France by the military successes of Joan of Arc and Charles VII.
In the battle at Agincourt,
Henry's forces won the day despite being vastly outnumbered 13,000 to 50,000 by the French,
largly due to the deadly effect of the English longbow.
The stupidity of the French knights who dismounted
and became mired in the mud was also a factor.
French losses: ca 5000.
English losses: 133.
