HOLMAN, Lucia (Ruggles) [1793-1886] -- American missionary, teacher and writer

A teacher before her marriage to Dr. Thomas Holman ¤, she accompanied him and her brother, Samuel Ruggles ¤, and his wife as missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands in 1819.
Mrs. Holman is believed to be the first American woman to circumnavigate the globe:
- Boston to Kailua, Hawaii (23 Oct 1819 - 04 Apr 1820, brig "Thaddeus")
- Hawaii to Boston, via Canton and the Cape of Good Hope (30 Jul 1820 - 15 May 1822, whaler "Mentor")
