A general trouble-maker,
he defended Lady Jane Grey's claim, and was imprisoned in London Tower for it.
Released, or assisted to escape, he fled to the continent
and spent some time in Strasburg with Peter Martyr.
On the accession of Elizabeth, he returned to England
and was appointed Bishop of Worcester.
He helped revise the Anglican liturgy,
and was one of the translators of the Bishop's Bible.
On the whole, Edwin was admired and respected,
and generally had the full support of Queen Elizabeth.
His great scholarship was evidenced in his sermons
(now available in hardback as "The Sermons of Edwin Sandys"),
his translations for the Bishop's Bible,
his various pastoral epistles and other letters,
and in his founding of the Hawkshead Grammar School.
