DIX, Dorothea Lynde [1802-1887] -- American philanthropist and reformer
Contents: |
Champion of decent conditions for treatment of the insane.
The product of a broken home, and a "difficult" childhood,
perhaps including physical abuse at the hand of her ne'er-do-well father,
she left home at the tender age of twelve.
From that moment, she did all she could do to expunge her childhood from memory and record.
In all her extant papers, for example, her father's name appears only once,
in a short note on his vital statistics.
She never married.
