Ireland (1553-1558), Queen
Daughter of ¤Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, she succeeded to the throne on the death of her half-brother ¤Edward VI, after disposing of the interloper ¤Jane Grey. Determined to reestablish Roman Catholicism in England, she married ¤Phillip II of Spain and undertook a program of persecuting the Protestants, burning hundreds at the stake. For this she is known as Bloody Mary.
Her reign is generally considered a failure. The populace became hardened against Catholicism, the economy was in ruins, and England's last Continental foothold, Calais, was lost.
She was succeeded by her half-sister, ¤Elizabeth I.
