Virginia's true founderThe first English speaking permanent settlement in the New World was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, on 14 May 1607 — 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Cape Cod. The leader of this expedition was – not young John Smith – but a distinguished soldier, Captain Edward-Maria Wingfield of Stonely Prior, Huntingdonshire. Smith was at the time under arrest for complicity in a mutiny.
So, how is it that we associate the Jamestown Settlement with John Smith and few have even heard of Capt. Wingfield? Capt. Smith had the good fortune to outlive his enemies and thereby got to record his version of events.
Smith's so-called History of Virginia is not a history at all; but chiefly a eulogy of Smith and a lampoon of his peers.
